Hi,
There are a couple of things it could be. But first try this.
Press and Hold the MENU and CENTER buttons until the ipod reboots. You will see the apple reappear and it will boot normally.

If it doesn't, here are a few things to check.

  • Plug the ipod in to an a/c wall plug and it should boot
  • have you played your ipod on a dock? that could have fried the motherboard and it needs to be repaired.
  • your battery could just be completely dead (very Common)
  • your hold switch is broken inside and stuck on hold.
If you need more answers comment back.

First of all hold the MENU and CENTER buttons until the ipod reboots, then hold the CENTER and PLAY PAUSE buttons, then you should come in disk mode. you see a checked sign. Then attach it to your PC with the USB cable, and when your IPOD shows up in ITUNES, push the repair button. It will reset and install new software on your IPOD. After the installation remove the USB cable from your PC and plug the ipod in to an a/c wall plug. Ready you are. It should work now. Not always, in my case it didn't work, and I had to go out and buy a new IPOD, because Apple refused to repair it. Buy a new one they said. Shame on you Apple !!

I had that problem with my old 1st gen ipod video 30gig it sounds like the hard drive in it died. you can try to have it repaired but im not sure how much it would cost. if its relatively new it should be under warranty and they should fix it for free

IPod classic stopped working. No response at all. It was working fine one day and the next day, nothing.

batterys are loose with intermittent power to thermostat circuit board place a tightly folded aluminum foil to about a 1/4inch square and place it between or at either end of the AA batteries. This tightens the connection and makes for a better contact.

My ipod classic 80gb just comes up with a red cross on the screen when i turn it on, i have tried putting it into manual disc mode but nothing happen.

red cross? I have had unhappy faces on my ipod, but not a red cross. Hmmn, my best bet is that the software is corrupt. Try restoring the iPod and see if that works.

My iPod classic 30 GB will not sync. If I hook it up to iTunes it says that the required disk cannot be found. I tried resetting and restoring it but it still won't work. In My Computer it says that there...

Unfortunately the only thing I could do to rectify this problem was "restore" my iPod which essentially means deleting everything and resyncing again. Very frustrating! I found this would happen if I plugged my iPod into my work computer where I didn't have full admin rights to the machine. It was corrupting the main file iTunes reads to see the directories on the iPod. So if you happen to be plugging it into another machine this might be the cause of it happening as I haven't had the problem since I stopped plugging it into my work machine.

Recharging

Had the same problem with mine. Strip your ipod and you'll find that the left hand end of the battery has been rubbing against the mounting screw for the hold button and the positive track is exposed causing it to short out the battery. Placing a piece of plastic between the battery and the mounting screw sorts out the problem. My ipod charged and the battery still works fine. It seems to be a common problem with this model. My Ipod classic 80 gb is frozen and won't turn on or charge!! HELP!!!!!!!

If it keeps happening (and your hear clicking or repetitive sound from inside) you have a broken hard drive. Open the iPod classic and replace the hard drive. The part is available on ebay. Here's a guide on how to disassemble an iPod classic. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to pay to have a service do it for you there are third party iPod Repair Services.
