It prints ok and with new cartridges. but green start light on and black ink light flashing. why

Hello, your black ink needs to be taken out and cleaned, just dab on a wet paper towel to get the ink running freely and clean the printhead with q tip where the cartridge inserts into, use a flashlight to see, make sure the printer is unplugged from the electric.

Screen on Gateway FPD2185 stays black.

The back light is out. Might be the inverter or the tube.

Flash fires irregularly... good exposures, then suddenly 3 way under exposed/black then a good exposure, the a completely burnt out over-exposed shot! Completely irregular.

If you are referring to the internal flash I would say you are firing the camera faster then the flash can cycle. There is a green lightning bolt that will come on in the viewfinder when the flash has charged. If you fire the first one it may be a charged flash then again you may have popped the flash composed and tripped the shutter before the flash has had a chance to fully charge. You fire again depleting the charge some more and before it has a chance to recover you fire it again so the flash never has a chance to fully charge. You need to wait till the flash ready light come on in the viewfinder.

285, red/green lights blink, whines on start up, but won't fire

Hi Dave,
Try shorting out Center Pin to Outside Metal Contact after the light turned green. This must fire the flash.
If not, could be the flashtube /or trigger are defective.
Do you have a DVM?

When fitting a Canon 430EX flash to 450D,,light emits but flash doesnt fire, no flash in any mode.

Your camera may have been set to not fire external flash. Go to your menu, 5th tab. Near the bottom, there's an option for Flash Control. Select that. It should now show "Enable" or "Disable". Enable it.

Also "External Flash func. Setting" gives you more options for your 430EX.
