Retraction operation not working on ames Hose reel 2442500 hose won't pull out - stuck. How do I disassemble casing to get hose to work. Seemed like the hose has overlapped and now won't pull out or go back in. Not sure if this is tension problem or if I need to take totally apart. Any help would be appreciated. Ames did not make available the disassembly diagram for this model.

Here is a general disassembly for wall hose reel.

This model is more similar to your one.

You have to remove the 4 screws at the side of the reel, you may need to remove a plastic cover to access the screws.

If you still have troubles you can also contact Ames at 1-800-393-1846.

Hi there,

A retractable hose reel assembly comprising a casing, a reel rotatably mounted in the casing, drive means for rotating the reel in a direction corresponding to winding of the hose on the reel,

first retaining means for preventing or limiting rotational movement of the reel in a winding direction and second retaining means for preventing or limiting rotational movement of the reel in an unwinding direction, wherein the second retaining means include an actuating member manually movable between an operative locking position, in which the second retaining means prevent or limit unwinding movement of the reel, and an inoperative unlocked position in which the second retaining means are inoperative, and wherein the actuating member is a pivotally movable lever incorporating or carrying a projecting end in the form of a crank, which, in the operative position, projects into the path of movement of the rotatable reel or a member carried thereby, in order to block rotation of the reel in an unwinding direction.

If the hose wont pull out - there could be a couple things wrong - the spring mechanism has jammed - the hose has bunched up on one side - or the lock has failed.
In any case - disassembly will be required to repair.
If the hose is pressurized - disconnect it and bleed the air - this should allow room for movement if it has become jammed on one side of the reel.
Otherwise - you will need to disassemble to check out the retract mechanism and lock.

If you have further clarifications once you disassemble - please use the "Continue with this expert" option so we are connected in the future.

Thanks!!

you'll have to remove the hose stopper from the hose.

then find a way - either by screws or tension clips to halve the case.

It appears it splits into a top and bottom half.

The retractor assembly will be evident once he top half is removed.

without having one in front of me I cannot be exact about the method of dissection, and the manufacturer does not offer a schematic or spare parts - so once you find out the problem - you still may not be able to fix it anyway :(

Can the hose in the retractable carrier be replaced? How do I do it?

You can replace that hose by fully extending it and locking the reel. At that point you should be able to unscrew the hose from its connector. A replacement hose can be screwed on in its place.

One alternative, if the reel's hose connector isn't inside the spool area, would be to just cut off the hose at the break, then buy a replacement hose end (with barb fitting to match your hose) and a small stainless-steel hose clamp. They work really well when you get one that's correctly sized for your hose. They're hazardous out at the "business end" of the hose, though - they can cut your hands.

Cord won't retract on exectrical cord reel

The most common cause is the the cord has been extended past its limits (fully extended) and can't be pulled any further to pull the latching mechanism far enough to release and allor the winder to do its think. (I used to manually force it to move further by using a screwdriver. Pushed the coil a bit further over (as if more cord was being extracted), just to the point where the latch could release.

How do I fix Frontgate retractable hose reel

If the problem with your Frontgate retractable how is that it simply won't retract, on the assumption that the hose hasn't gotten off the coiling wheel and become tangled, and that there isn't a problem with the hose distributor - which runs off a rubber drive belt, or some other mechanical problem, it is possible to re-tension the spring on a retractable hose.

The principle of these retractable hoses is similar to the energy that is stored in the spring when you pull the starting cord on your lawn mower - which then retracts the cord when you release the pull handle. With the hose completely recoiled, using the blade of a screw driver, you can pry off the triangular cover on the left-hand side of the unit. You'll note four Phillips head screws which secure the round, black, plastic plate to the body of the caddy. If the tension is already "out" of the spring you can remove these screws and nothing will happen. If there is some residual tension remaining, the plastic plate may rotate clockwise a couple of turns when the last screw is removed (it won't spin like an airplane propeller, so don't worry . . .).

To re-tension the spring, I used a crescent wrench and opened the jaws so that the width matched the gap between the two slots you'll see in the plastic plate, and inserted the wrench into the two slots (the wrench will be at a right angle to the plate, at this point. Then, while holding the crescent wrench in place, I used a metal bar, and inserted it through the hole at the other end of the wrench (for better leverage), and turned the plastic plate counter-clockwise five full turns. Then, while keeping the tension on the plastic plate, re-insert all four Phillips head screws, and fully re-secured the plastic plate.

If the inner spring isn't damaged, this should restore the tensioning to the hose reel, as the spring will be further tensioned then automatically, as the hose is uncoiled - which will then be the stored energy that recoils the hose.

catch pawl in the reel is shot. I used to work in places where this happened. The only solution is tie the hose off on to a stationary object.
The only other solution is replace the reel..
