Quartz clocks not keeping proper time

I have TWO different quartz wall clocks (just simple round ones, about a foot or so in diameter), and they both worked fine for years. Now, I've got them both in my new classroom (I'm a teacher and I've just moved to South Carolina from Nashville, TN), and BOTH are acting flaky. They both seem to run fast, but not exactly the same, and it seems to vary. Any tips on how to fix this? (Obviously, I've tried replacing batteries, but this doesn't work.) I'd appreciate any help!

On the front of one, it says ''Ingraham USA'' with Takame USA on the little box on the back where you put the single AA battery; the other is just says ''China'' (in addition to ''Quartz'') on the front, and something about ''unadjusted'' and ''Made in China'' on the little box on the back where you put the battery.

I don't think either one was extraordinarily expensive, but one (the China one) has sentimental value and I'd love to get it fixed!

Thanks in advance...

SOURCE: seth thomas autoset wall clock not functioning.

I wish I had a solution... I'm in the exact same situation. I put in new batteries, and all I get is a faint reading of gibberish from the LCD screen, and that's it. I've tried following the instructions, but I can't set the time in the LCD clock, since it's unreadable, and almost completely gone. Seththomas.com has a web page indicating that "they will be back with info", but no support or FAQ pages. Disappointing... I have three of these clocks, and they are all behaving the same way.

Anon, replace battery with a good strong AA Energizer or Duracell Alkaline not a cheap battery, make sure battery contact point in clock are clean and no corrosion. If this does correct the problem, the clock mechanism is probably just wearing out from age which is normal unless it is digital. Read through the links and learn how some time mechanisms can be made to work properly again. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

In a quartz movement clock, with a problem like this, the chime box (or whole movement) will need to be replaced. Timesavers.con carries a large selection of chiming quarts movements.

Bulova wall clock hands won't move

I haven't much experience of this type of clock. A friend has such a quartz pendulum clock and I was surprised to discover the pendulum has no direct mechanical contact with the clock motor and as long as the motor draws some current from the battery the pendulum will swing due to the resulting influence of a small electromagnet.

I guess the quartz mechanism is at least electrically ok but somewhere there is a mechanical fault preventing the hands moving.

A typical quartz clock motor is fairly simple and dismantles easily to reveal only a few internal parts that can be examined under a magnifier to determine the probable fault - dust, burrs or excessive wear.

It is also worth making certain the clock hands do not bind on each other or the clock face.

Does anyone know where to get a replacement 'movement' for the Michael Graves's Alessi mantle clock.

Yep - I know a clock repairman in California who still has some of the original Hechinger Quartz Movements for the Alessi pendulum clock . Definately worth repairing .
