SOURCE: does the wireless mouse receiver has battery?

Yes please you have to as five years is a very long time for any battery to survive. Also I am sure you have its CD that came with it so that you can load its drivers. So, Install the drivers first. Then connect it to the PC after a reboot. Allow Windows to detect it and load its drivers and then start using it.

I own a Lenovo Mini Wireless Mouse (Model number N30). It has been working fine since the last 4 months I have owned it. However, I noticed today that the small light on the top of the mouse is blinking...

It's indeed the low batteries indicator. I have a Lenovo N30 myself.
I suggest you use a good pair of rechargeable AAA batteries.
They last longer than regular alkaline.
Best regards.

The mouse has stopped working /responding--what could be the issue? Does this take batteries? I cannot find a place that they would go...

Logitech uses either 1 or 2 AAA batteries or 1 or 2 AA batteries.
The way to change them is:
1. locate the oblong button on the bottom (usually near the palm end) of the mouse.
2. Press and hold the button
3. Lift off the cover (top) from the palm end.
4. Replace the batteries as indicated inside the cover.
5. Reinstall the cover. Be sure to catch the little tabs under the buttons.
6. There may be a reconnect button also (small red and recessed) you may have to reset the connection after changing the battery.
