SOURCE: freezer compartment has frost buildup

This can be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

SOURCE: How to remove and install fan in freezer compartment of GE side by side

Most of these fans have a small dowell pin that goes through the fan blade sleeve and through the shaft look for a pin on the side of the fan blade sleeve then you will need a pin punch to push this pin through. After you do this save the pin or dowell because you will need it to attach the new fan.

SOURCE: Fridge and Freezer Not getting Cold

Your defrost system is at fault.
With this brand it is most likely the defrost thermostat and defrost heater located behind the back freezer panel.
Remove the shelves and bin, then remove the freezer panel. Defrost the ice manually.
Replace the thermostat and heater assembly.

Check the rear of your freezer compartment. If it's frosted up, your defrost circuitry is bad. If it's not frosted up, then you probably have a coolant leak and need a professional.

I have a kenmore side by side refrigerator freezer. It's about 15 years old. Recently the freezer has started making a loud humming noise. HELP

Good day,
The most common reason for noise is the fan motor in the freezer compartment.
Remove the screws from the rear panel in the freezer compartment and inspect the fan motor. Replacing it is a fairly easy nuts and bolts procedure. The motor should be available at most appliance parts houses.
kenmore is a trade name for Sears appliances. It was made by either Whirlpool or Frigidaire.

Refridgerator is only cold on the bottom. Fridge is a side by side and both sides are doing the same thing. Top shelves are not cold or freezing, but the bottom ones are. What is causing this?

Good day,
The common reason for this is the fan motor behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment is not running.
With the machine on and running, open the freezer door. You should hear the fan running.
If not the motor can be accessed by removing the rear panel in the freezer compartment.
Replacement is a nuts and bolts operation.

Fridge at room temp

Good day,
two common reasons fro this.
1. The fan motor in the freezer compartment has failed and is not driving air to the fresh food compartment.
2. The second common problem is the defrost system has failed, blocking air from entering the fresh food compartment.
First indication is frost building up on the rear panel in the freezer. Remove rear panel and inspect.

Here is an excellent tutorial on defrost system repair.

I have a side by side refrigerator, the frezzer

Usually caused by one of 2 reasons.
1. The fan motor behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment that drives cold air into the Fresh food side.
2. More commmonly the defrost system fails, causing the evaporator located behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment to frost up to the point it blocks the air from the freezer to reach the freas food side.
The defrost system is made up of 3 components.
A. The defrost control(either a mechanical timer or a solid state module). B. The defrost thermostat commonly called a limiter.
This is a small round disc type thermotat mounted on or near the top of the evaporator(cooling coil) behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment.
C. The defrost heater. A calrod heater similair to the baking element in an electric range located in the same place as the defrost thermostat.
To test these components, you need a working knowledge of electrical, and have access and knowledge how to use a VOM meter.
If not, you can remove the components and take them to an appliance parts house. Most of these stores will be happy to test them for you.
Some do-it-yourselfers will, if in fact the coils in the freezer were frosted badly, will simply buy all 3 parts and replace them.
Note: The main heater rarely fails. Replacing the limiter and defrost control will do the trick in most cases.

Damsel in Distress - Fire Hazard?? Please help...

sounds like the fan blade may have started to hit ice inside of the unit. Make sure that the unit is clear of ice by defrsting it manually with either a shop vac reversed or by using a blow drier on the coils inside until they thaw out. good luck with this.
