SOURCE: microwave makes a strange humming

Assuming nothing's loose (such as from past repair attempt) then it may be the magnetron failing.

Your best bet is to keep using but (as always) do not leave it unattended while it's running.

Then if things get worse in some way, that would be a harder failure that can be assessed more easily.

If you are close to the end of the warranty period (1 year parts & labor or 9-year magnetron, e.g.) I would not wait past then.

GE Customer Service is here if you would prefer service now and want to find your nearest GE-authorized servicer.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: My Frigidaire over the stove microwave not heating food

Hi,It is most likely the magnetron and diode that has to be replaced. This job should be done by a tech, High voltage. Magnetron's normally have a five year warranty, check your owners manual.

Hello,
Microwaves use a magnetron to emit the waves, they make a very characteristic (and loud) humming sound when they 'kick-in.' If it is not making this sound that's your problem. It is not a user-replaceable part so please take it to an appliance repair shop, or purchase a replacement (which will probably be the same or lesser cost than repair unfortunately.)

I hope that this will help in solving the problem....

If its making a humming noise, that means the diode is bad and should be replaced. Once replaced the microwave will begin to heat again.

If the gets give no gas then sounds like a Thermocouple, this is a device that allows the gas to come on after a period of time ensuring that the pilot is lit and heated up this thermocouple, once it heats it then allows gas to enter and ignite the main burner..hope this helps ,please leave feedback.

Noise/humming while cooking; especially popcorn; intermitent on other food

Popcorn is heated by a metallic insert in the bag. This causes some additional power consumption by the magnetron. It is no cause for alarm.
