Question about Whirlpool Dishwashers
John make sure the drain line under the sink and unit haven't been pinched from stuff under the sink in particular. Check where the drain hose attaches to drain under sink and take it off and make sure it's clear. It is one of the most common areas where the drain hose gets clogged at the connection or in line at a sharp kink in the hose. If the unit is not running then the problem is there and if the unit makes no noise when in pump mode you should be able to tell. That could indicate a bad pump or switching issue from clean to empty. Now for the occasional weird things that happen. In the bottom of the dishwasher is a screen of sorts that keeps large objects from getting into the pump. I have on occasion found that screen so full of food particles that the water can't get to the pump. Most dishwashers have a mulching type unit on the pump to help chop food up but if the stuff can't get to it, it clogs. I know of 2 units that ruined the pump from running them dry and in both, food clog was the problem. The screen is readily accessible and a semi- soft brush and hot water should clear it. The reason this happens is the food gets baked on the screen when the unit goes into dry mode. Like I said it's not real common but if all else says the unit should empty, check this.

Tips for a great answer:
Two things to consider....clean water or
Clean water usually indicates the fill valve
is not shutting off all the way and the fill valve is "weeping" water
in all the time = new fill valve time!!
Dirty water usually is not a dishwasher
problem but more of a plumbing issue. Often the sink drain that carries the
sinks water outside is not fast enough and some of this sink water is backing
up into the drain hose and filling up the dishwasher through the drain hose.
The drain from the sink to outside needs attention as this type of a problem
indicates a slow house drain for that sink.
The dishwasher drain line should be clamped to the top underneath part of the counter before entering the sink drain plumbing, this may help the water from coming back inside the dishwasher.
