Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

6 month old garage door will work.

The garage door does not work. I checked the electronic eyes and one is green and the other is yellow. I made sure they were aligned? What does the yellow light mean and is this the cause of the problem? We have the same problem, one sensor is green & the other sensor is yellow. We are using the hand remote control. Our garage door opener is a Craftsman 139.18473DM (opener) HBW2028 (remote). The garage opens only 1 foot & stops & then we push the remote again & goes back to starting positon. This is a brand new opener. We just received it for a gift. We had a professional electrican install it & he couldn´t find out why it wouldn´t work either. Please help, it is becoming very frustrating. What a gift, we haven´t even been able to use it once.

We have done that both with the up force & down force. Originally the door opened but would only close 1 foot & stop like as if something was in the way. The electrician that installed the opener already tried this technique but didn´t help the matter. I will try it again & let you know what hapapens. I know the down force is on max. but the up force I´m not sure. Wish me luck. Thanks for the advice.

Hi It´s me again. I did what you said. I turned the upforce 1/4 & the door did open completely & then started closing but then stops. I checked the down force control & it is on max. So now both the up force & down force control bottoms are on maximum & still can´t complete at least one time the door to open & close properly. This is becoming very frustrating. Do you have any other solutions.

Hi: Thanks for your helpful information. We think we have it solved. First the GDO is only 2 months old so we still have warranty. I just responded to someone elses messagewhich was 6 months old. I took your advise & moved the dial 1/4 & the door does open but only closes 1 foot. When my husband goes out & puts pressure on door it will close. I came across another person who has the same make as ours & apparently has had the same problem. She apparently has had 8 technicians out, has had parts replaced & it still doesn´t work. The soultion is to take it back & get another one. If we had bought it ourselves this is what we would have done, but being a gift it made the situation even harder. Thanks for your patience & your advise.

On the back of the opener near where all those white wires go you will find 2 controls. One is labeled "up force." Increase this about 1/4 turn.

At this point I strongly recommend you call Sears and have their technician look at your opener. If it is new it will still be under warranty and it makes no difference who installed it. Not only will the Sears technician repair it but he will adjust those controls properly. They affect the safety of the opener.

I just reread your original post and saw that your opener is 6 months old. It will be out of warranty. I am confused because you first said your door will come up a foot and stop and then you said it will go down a foot and stop. Anyway try releasing the door from the opener. This is done by pulling the rope down and back towards the opener. This will lock it in the released position. To unlock it later just pull straight down on the rope and release. Now open and close the door by hand and see if there are hard spots or if the door is extra heavy. You will know if it is. It should also stay in place when you left it about belt to chest high. If it does this it is balanced. If it is heavy you may have a broken spring on the door. Run the opener with the door disconnected and see how it goes. If all this fails then bite the bullet and call Sears. I know how frustrating this all is right now but in the end you will be super happy to have a door opener.

The lights on the bottom are green and yellow, are they both supposed to be green?

No the yellow or amber light is the sending eye and the green is the receiver.

Chamberlain troubleshooting

Check to see if sensors (eye) on sides of door are lined up, they need to be looking directly at each other. If that doesn't work change sensors, simple, install, hook up 2 wires per sensor, wire with line to same wire, blank wire to same blank wire and align so sensors see each other.

I have a craftsman garage door opener and I have to hold the button down in order to close the door. The door opens fine and the sensors are clear. The unit starts to close then stops, the lights start...

When you can close the door by holding down the wall button it IS the safety eyes or wiring.

If the eyes are mounted to the track. Many times the track wll move as the door closes causing the eyes to move out of alignment.
Watch as the door moves down and see if they need to be adjusted.

If the eyes are not both lit - they are out of alignemnt or have a wiring problem. try adjusting them and see if the lights come on. - if not check the wiring

Hope this helps

Door opens but have to hold button in to close

Your safety reversing sensors must be connected and aligned correctly before the garage door opener will close. An obstruction in the path of the sensor will also cause your door to not close.
This sensor is an electronic beam, which is sent between two sending and receiving “eyes”. These eyes face each other and are located just inside your garage door. They may need to be adjusted so the beam from the sending eye is properly detected by the receiving eye. Once the receiving eye “sees” the beam from the sending eye, a green indicator light will glow on the eye.

New eye sensor not lighting up when installed

Make sure the sensors are pointed at one another. Also one of them should say "sending unit" and the other is the "receiving unit". Did you buy them new and from a dealer?

Garage Door Opener Lights

Some craftman operator don't have that feature. Are both photo eye lights green? Feature not available. If the photo eyes are yellow and green feature should be avilable. The operator needs to have a three button wall station. With the light on the operator off press and hold the "light" button for about a minute until the light flashes.

Programing limits on a Grifco MK3 Garage door Operator

It has the "Protector System" (safety sensors). chec the sensor indicator light on the receivinng eye the green light had a slight flicker.cleaned both the sending eye and receiving eye lens of dust and cob webs, then realigned the receiving sensor for a steady green indicator light. then check the door function it now works fine.over time, temperature, and viberation the sensors become dirty and get out of alignment, as no one had tampered with the sensor alignment prior to this. Hope this works for you.
