"on indicator" light stays on

The big burner stuck "on" one day. Had to disconnect power to shut it off. Now everything works, but I'm afraid range might turn on while it's unattended. On indicator is lit all the time

SOURCE: Light indicator when burner is turned on will not shut off.

if there is one light for all the switches, you will need to unplug the unit, take off the top part of the back panel to get access to your switches. the indicator light is run to all 4 switches. you will need to unplug the wire that goes to the indicator light from each switch ( only one at a time ) and plug the unit back in each time. do this for every switch until the light goes out. whichever switch has the indicator light wire removed from it when the light goes out is the switch that needs to be replaced. if your unit has an indicator light for each switch, then just replace the switch that is above the indicator light. SOURCE: Indicator Light

If your referring to the one that indicates that one of the burners is on. Then your problem is one of your burner switches is starting to go bad. To find out which one. Open the back and with the unit unpluged you will notice that all the switches are wired to the light. Disconnect the wire from one of the switches and plug unit back in to see if that corrected the problem. If it did .. that is your bad switch, if it's still on disconnect your power and try the next switch until you find the switch that causes your problem. That switch will have to be replaced.

The stove has 4 burner switches with a # 2 terminal on each switch. This contact is similiar on all four switches. One of the switches # 2 contact is stuck. The burner switch should disconnect both legs of the 240 volt circuit, one leg through the # 2 terminal and one leg through the thermostat built into the burner switch. Disconnect the pilot lamp wire on each switch unti the light goes off and then replace that burner switch. This should correct the problem

Oven Hot Surface Indicator Light stays on

There have been many questions concerning the failure of the hot surface indicator lights on electric cooktops and stoves and ranges. It seems as though they like to stay on and not shut off. So I did some research and will combine that with my experience to give you an explanation of what has happened and what you will need to do to correct the problem.

The first thing to remember is that on some cook tops the indicator light will come on when power is first applied. The light may stay on for 30-40 minutes in some cases.

Do not be alarmed by this, it is just a way of showing that the light does indeed work.

Now for lights that seems to be a problem and do not shut off. Give any indicator light at least two hours of cooling time before getting alarmed. If it is very warm in the house or kitchen the time may be longer. If you have an electric stove over an oven and you are using the oven then the times can be even longer. The heat underneath will prolong the cooling of the burner. Likewise in the summertime the time it takes to shut off will be much longer then in the wintertime, especially if your house does not have air conditioning.

The indicator light is controlled by a heat sensor either attached to, or near the burner. In some cases the sensor can be replaced separately and on other units the sensor is attached and part of the burner assembly and therefore the whole burner will have to be replaced to correct the problem.

Finally there are a couple of different ways that the indicator lights operate. On some ranges there is one light for all the burners. If this is the case then the sensor wires will need to be unhooked one by one to find exactly which burner is causing the false reading.

One other stoves each burner has an individual indicator light and so it is easy to see where the problem is.

Appliance parts can be purchased online easily but the replacement of these parts is not always easy and it can take quite a bit of experience to know how to replace these parts safely and efficiently. These types of repairs are often not something that the average homeowner wants to try to do.

If you do want to try and tackle this repair yourself, here is a tip about how to buy

Whirlpool electric range burner exploded ''on'' light on always

Hi There,
While the stove is unplugged remove the bad burner from the stove and set the bad burner's control knob to the "OFF" position. Now plug the stove back in. If there is a problem it should trigger the breaker and shut off the stove. If you are not comfortable doing this you might want to ask someone.
The explosion was due to a shorted burner element and once it is removed there shouldn't be any more problems. I hope this was helpful and I hope you get your stove going again.

Surface unit indicator light is always on

One set of contacts in a surface unit switch is "welded" together, causing the burner indicator (pilot) light to remain on even when all burners are shut off.
With power disconnected to the range, remove the back cover behind the switches and pull one of the wires going from a surface unit switch to the indicator lamp. Make sure the bare wire is not touching anything and reconnect power. If the light goes out (and still goes on when the other burners are turned on) you found the bad switch. If light still on, repeat the procedure with another one of the burner switches (reconnecting the first) until you find which switch is the bad one. (most often it is the burner you use the most, generally the right front burner) If you post your full model number and tell me which switch it is, I can look up the part number for you.

Whirlpool electric range burner power light stays on but no heat

Hello givemeanidth.
Welcome to Fixya

You said, have a Whirlpool electric range (model rf363pxpt0) with standalone burners - the burner power indicator light stays lit whether the heat control knob is on or off, there is no heat coming from the burner on or off. You pulled the burner from the receptacle and one of the tabs broke off and stayed in the receptacle. You removed the tab and made sure no pieces remained in the receptacle then bought a replacement burner, no change. You put the replacement burner in the back burner of the same size and had heat within 10 seconds. You changed out the burner with the one that had been in the back of the range, no heat. As long as the breaker to the range is on the power light stays lit but no power to that one burner only.

What is the model number and the age of your range?

Waiting for your reply.
