We bought a Emerson dvd/vcr player from Wal Mart, we have had it no more than 9 months, Wal Mart will not exchange it, we no longer have the reciept, and besides, if its been more than thirty days, Wal Mart will not do anything anyway.

Re: It will not turn on
Most units have a fuse on the circuit board that must be soldered on. Some power supply components can be replaced through www.digikey.com or www.mouser.com . You can remove power and disassemble the unit. Look for items on the pc board nearest the power plug. Probable failures are usually integrated circuits and are usually black with silver leads. The part number is usually on the top or side and if you enter the part number into the search page of digikey or mouser and the ic is common, you can display a data sheet that tells you what the device is and how it operates.

Do you have a problem w/ people to open and close the drive readily? Like little kids or something? B/c It sounds like ur drive motor could have worn/burned out. If that's the case, take it back to Wal-mart(if they have the same one) and exchange it. Wal-mart is an investment. ha ha.. I hope this helps.
5YRS OF USE?I WOULD HAVE TO SAY IT HAS PROBALY BOUGHT THE FARM(OR IS ABOUT TO)USE THE UNIT FOR ITS VCR FUNCTION,& BUY ANOTHER DVD PLAYER.YOU CAN GET A GOOD 1 FOR AROUND 40$ WAL MART HAS A NICE SELECTION.I JUST BOUGHT A PHILLIPS FOR 34$ AND IT WORKS GREAT.ANOTHER OPTION WOULD BE TO TRY A DVD LENS CLEANER & SEE IF THIS HELPS.EITHER WAY IT WOULD COST YOU MORE THAN THE UNIT IS WORTH TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.HOPE THIS HELPS
I've been told they have been exchanging them regardless to the standard return policy because Wal Mart wan't in good faith doing business with a manufacturer that they knew was going out of business. So for good PR, there exchanging them with a player or equal or lesser value.
One thing you can do is report it to ripoffreport.com and take some pictures of it. The media gets involved on that site from time to time. I know I was talking to them about a product line a few months ago and spoke with a consumer reported in Ohio. If you Google it by make and model number, you might be able to find out who the manufacturer is and see what the complaint area is like.
Okay have had the same problem for 6 months, have bought 10 different brands and speeds of DVDs. Tried the reset idea, 5 times still no luck! I was so furstrated I was just going to buy me a new player.
Then I seen a laser lens cleaner, it was under $10 dollars at Wal mart. Came home reset the played 1st then tried the cleaning disc. I"M recording AGAIN and no error messages!
