Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Washer vibrates madly on spin, feet are level

The washer shakes the house on spin cycle. Lately, the noise it makes sounds like more than just a shaky machine. It sounds like internal parts gone awry. It is too old to pay someone to fix it but worth trying to fix on my own. It is an old unit, about ten years, maybe more. I do not know where to start. if someone can point me in a direction in troubleshooting, I would be appreciative.

This usually happens when the load is uneven.

Thank you. I realize that could be the problem. However, it happens every load and has been going on for some time. I doubt I have an uneven load each time. However, your response has given me an idea - I will try an empty load and see how it performs. Thank you for responding.

every so often I get this happening but it goes away, to do all that John is asking of you to do seems pretty unreasonable. Just try putting in less clothes perhaps try a slower mode like instead of normal wash try delicate and make sure it is even.

Try checking the drum bearings and shocks. They might have been damaged during the previous heavy vibrations. This is certainly not a problem with the motor. Will try getting some internal diagrams to disassemble in case you are handy and need them.Else call a local technician and get them changed for good.Good luck with the machine. Please do post comments and results.

SOURCE: NOISE DURING SPIN CYCLE

You have to take the tub out, take off the rotor from the bottom of the washer, remove 4 bolts and take off the stator, take off the bearing retaining nut, then drive the 2 bearings out with a drift. I bought the bearings online for 20 bucks from a supplier (VBX). They are standard metric bearings number 6005 and 6006. I put some silicone grease on the shaft seal and drove the new bearings into place. Then reassembled, and the washer is whisper quiet.

4 month old washer is so loud it sounds like someone dropping a trash can to the pavement from 5 feet high

Check to make sure it's level. Number one cause of vibration is not being level. Number two cause is soft floor and what I call "Sympathetic vibration" where the floor shakes a bit and it seems like it's in time with the vibration on the washer. It then magnifies the vibration and makes it worse.

If it's level and on a solid floor, you need to get it serviced under warrenty.

Washer shakes terribly in spin cycle

Does the floor or the walls shake? If they do you have to beef up the flooring under your washer, with blocks between the floor joists, piers, or sistering of the joists. If there is no shaking of the floor or walls, and your washer is solid on the ground, leveled and not rocking, then it is your washer. Lg has problems with too much vibration in their washers. Check to make sure that your lint filter/coin catcher is clean. Open the door in the bottom front, put a towel down to catch the water, Unplug the washer, and unscrew the large plastic screw that is the filter for your washer. If this has debris in it clean it out completely. Look in the hoses also, if your water drain is restricted by lint or coins or other debris, the washer has clothes in it that are wetter and heavier than they should be, and this will cause sever vibration. LG WM0532HM is level but make my house vibrate Can anyone help?

Put 5 or 6 bath towels on a quick wash cycle.
During the spin cycle adjust the feet on the washer to smooth out the vibrations. Some times you only have to adjust one foot on the front to make a big difference.
If you have a pedastal snug up the washer feet to the pedastal then proceed above.

The washer came with a flat silver wrench to adjust the feet.

MAYTAG LAT8506AAE WASHER - TERRIBLE NOISE/VIBRATION ON SPIN

Try this for re-setting the balancing mechanism:
With the washer empty, tip tip it forward so that it is just sitting on the front feet. Hold it there for a few seconds, then gently lower the back down. (Often there is a mechanism in the back feet that automatically levels it for you--if this doesn't work, check that the back feet are not damaged.)

Washplate problem Kenmore Elite Calypso washer

Hello genny2626
Welcome,

You said, your 6 year old Kenmore elite top loader's wash plate doesn't seem to go through its proper motions. When the lid is closed and the washer has filled and the agitating cycle begins, you can hear a vibrating noise as if the plate is trying to move on the gentle cycle, but when the lid is opened, nothing has moved at all. The drain and spin work fine, and the machine goes through an entire cycle without error messages, but the clothes aren't clean. You said, you have heard a lot of horror stories of how expensive these washers are to repair, so would like an idea of what's wrong beforehand.

Here are a list of common vibration noises

Noisy, vibrating, off-balance

Is the washer level? Does the washer rock when pushed
against the corners?
The washer must be level. The front and rear feet must be in
firm contact with the floor. Check that the locknuts are
tightened. See “Level the Washer.”
Is the floor flexing, sagging or not level?
Flooring that flexes or is uneven can contribute to noise and
vibration of the washer. A ³⁄₄" (1.9 cm) piece of plywood under
the washer will reduce the sounds. See “Location
Requirements.”
 Is the load balanced?
Evenly distribute the load in the washer basket and make
sure the height of the load does not exceed the top row of
basket holes. See “Starting Your Washer.”
Do you hear clicking or other noises when the cycle
changes from washing to draining or spinning?
When the drive system shifts or the washer basket settles
between cycles you may hear noises that are different from
your previous washer. These are normal washer noises.
Is the washer gurgling or humming?

Is the washer level? The wash load
should be balanced and not overloaded. The washer must be
level. The front feet should be properly installed and the nuts
tightened. Reset the rear leveling legs (if needed). See the
Installation Instructions.
Did you completely remove the yellow shipping strap with
cotter pins? See the Installation Instructions.
• Are the gears engaging after the drain and before spin, or
is the upper part of agitator clicking during wash? These
are normal washer noises.

Let me know if any of these are the solution!

Even after leveling my Frigidaire washer on a pedestal, the washer shook the house during ramping up on spin cycle. I found some Shake Away pads at Lowes. They are small pads that just go under each foot of the washer. I'm not sure how they work but THEY DO. The best 30 bucks I ever spent

Friadaire washer on a pedestal

Check the levelness of the washer by placing a level in the crease between the top of the washer and the cabinet, first on the front and then on the side. If the washer is not level, adjust the relevant feet up or down as necessery by twisting the feet. Repeat the process until washer is level. Tight the locknuts tight against the washer cabinet to prevent washer's vibration. Good luck!
