I don't want the Vtech answering machine to work but suddenly is is now serving as my answering machine. How do I turn it off?

Since you didn't specify the model of your machine I can't give you a definite answer, but on many VTech systems there's an ANS ON/OFF that toggles the answering machine between ON and OFF.

Enter the model of your system into the search box at
http://www.vtechphones.com/vtechphones/index.cfm/support/general/manuals/
to get the manual.

Do I need a new battery the answering machine says it is off?

Most VTech answering machines can be turned on and off. This has nothing to do with the battery, it's simply whether the machine answers a call or lets it ring.
Since you didn't specify the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to turn it on/off. I can only direct you to enter the model number into the search box here to download a copy of the manual.

You must turn off your internal answering machine. There should be an on and off button somewhere on the main base.
