Depends on the manufacturer, check their website, with Western Digital drives you can type the serial number into the website and it will tell you if the warranty is still valid or not.

SOURCE: Is it possible to boot from an Iomega eGo

It's possible to clone to this drive, but over the USB interface, it will be very slow. Firewire would be faster. It's also possible to boot from it, but again, it will be slower than an internal. What you've described, however, IS possible.

Hi, it might be a file system error.
You could try removing the hdd from the usb enclosure and connect it directly to your pc via SATA.
(power off both of them before doing so)
If it really is the file system then scan disk should repair it automatically when turning on the pc.
Then if the pc recognizes it you can put it back in the usb enclosure.
Good luck!

This is the real capacity of your 500 GB hard disk - they are measuring it incorrectly for commercial reasons (in reality it's just 488GB) and there is a part that is reserved internally. There is nothing else.

It sounds like the HDD has become defective. This is quite common as they are mechanical devices with moving parts. If it is still within it's warranty period I suggest you return for a replacement.

This is normal. SATA II drives spin much faster and run much hotter then IDE drives. You can attach a hard drive cooler to the hard drive if you wish and if there is enough room in your case.
