Question about Filter Queen Majestic Canister Vacuum

Canister works, vacuum doesnt

WHen I turn on my vacuum the motor on the canister part turns on fine, but the actual sweeper part does not work. The wooden cleaner inside does not turn ans seems stuck. I took it all apart and there is nothing preventing it from moving. I thought maybe the reset trigger button was malfunctioning, but I have no idea.

Re: Canister works, vacuum doesnt

I 've been cannibalizing Kenmore canister vacs for decades b/c you can use some of the parts some of the time but not all of the parts all of the time. Presently I use the cannister of a maroon 24111 with the beater bar of 2395 b/c none of my collection of the newer "powerheads" with the belt in the middle of the brush head have enuf power to work on carpet no matter how low the pile. The brush bar spins just fine when I pick it up to inspect it but stops when lowered to the carpet. Sears replaced the belts many times but never improved this design flaw, explaining that it was "just the nature of the beast"!

Re: Canister works, vacuum doesnt

There could be a break in the electric from the machine to the hose - or from the hose to the wand - or from the wand to the Power Nozzle - or it could be the motor is bad.

Wiggle the cord at the Hose with it running- then go to the Wand - then to the Power Nozzle. You may find a break in the wires anywhere along the line.

unplug the Vacuum:

If you have a meter check to see if the reset is working - and last check to see if the motor will work removed from the Nozzle.

My kenmore progressive canister vacuum turns on only if the hose is attached to the floorwand. It seems that the canister motor is not working because I can't hear anything coming from the caniste

If the floor wand is powered, there may be an electrical connection that is broken when the wand is disconnected. This is part of the design, not necessarily a fault

The performance indicator light is red and I have no suction.

If the motor runs, then the problem is usually plugged air passages near the bag/canister or the sweeper head/hose. Remove any hoses/bags/canisters so that you are dealing with only the vacuum producing parts. If it has a sweeper head, remove the bottom plate and clean any visible clogs in the air passages--the same with the area where the debris collects normally. Turn on the motor to see if you are getting air flow through the machine. If nothing, dig deeper into those air passages. Hope this helps!

My canister kenmore progressive is not sucking and is sptitting carpet powder dust all over the place. could it be it needs a new hpa filter? if so where on the vacuum would it be located?

Remove the hose from the canister, and turn on the vacuum. Does it produce good air flow into the hose port?. If ok, remove the hose from the sweeper unit and plug the end into the canister. If ok, check the bottom of the sweeper head for plugging of the air passages and inspect the sweeper bar for accumulation of thread, hair, and string. If the first test produced no air flow, then open the canister and remove the bag--turn the vacuum on and check for air flow into the motor. If still nothing, then check the hepa filter which should be near the air output from the canister. Go to: and enter the sears model number from the information plate. The machine's part drawings will appear and select the vacuum case drawing which should display the hepa filter location and also be able to order the filter from the web site. Hope this helps!

My vacuum is constantly shutting itself off. When

It sounds like you have a blockage somewhere and the air is not passing over the motor to keep it cool. There is usually a thermostat mounted either on or near the motor. The blockage can be anywhere from the elbow ( the swivel part of your carpet sweeper if you have a canister vac) up thru the hose.If you have a canister vac, use a broom handle to push through the hose to clear the blockage. DO NOT ! use a coat hanger or anything that will cut or tare the hose. There are electrical wires in it that have 120 volts and causes quite a shock !
If you have an upright vac, start with the duct hose that comes from the part with the brush up to the hose and on to the main canister of the vac
If this does not work, take your vac to a reputable vac shop for repair. Hope this helps,

Sweeper stops running, when I jiggle the electric cord

The wiggle test is very popular and widely used. If you can gently wiggle the area that is in question and it can cause a change. Then yes, it is an electrical issue (loose wire or connection) but if not, and you have to be aggressive with the unit to get a change. Then it could be a bad motor.

Bissell powerforce bagless vacuum, when turned on dust flies out sweeper

Dust flying out of the sweeper indicates that their is a blockage in the pathway that the dirt normally travels to get into the dirt collection chamber. Turn the sweeper upside down and look for a blockage of some kind. Also, empty out the canister and look to see that the pathway into the canister is clear.

Vacuum won't turn on!!

Some of these have a relay or circuit board down by the main motor that may have gone bad. Could have a problem with the circuit board in the hose handle, Could have a problem with the motor. Will jusy have to have opened up and checked. Go to, click on parts, put in your complete model number, a parts list and picture will come up, maybe that will help you.
