Generally, high SWR relates to an antenna problem. It could be as simple as the coax connector isn't tight enough. You could have damage to the coax cable, or the antenna may be damaged due to wind, or water in it. If you have access to an antenna analyzer, it will help you troubleshoot your antenna and coax, if not, start with a thorough visual inspection, looking for damage, cracking, or water infiltration.

The light for high swr keeps coming on. replaced antenna and coaxle. how do i go about lowering the swr. is there a nob or switch for this. thank you

You cannot lower the SWR via the radio. it has to do with the antenna. The length of the antenna is essential to transmitting properly. It must match the transmitting frequency.

To check SWR tune to ch 20. Flip the meter switch to CAL. Key the radio without talking into the radio. Turn the CAL knob up until the meter needle is at the CAL mark. Unkey the mic. Flip the meter switch to SWR. key the radio again, and the meter will show your SWR. We already know it is high because you are getting antenna warning, but we will have a base line now to work on.

What you did was calibrate the meter for that channel. that is necessary to check the SWR. So you must calibrate for each channel you check.

You should at least be under 2 swr. Ideal is 1.5 or under. the lower the better.

If your SWR is high, your antenna is either too long or too short. To find out here is what you do:

Check the SWR on ch 1 and ch 40 calibrating for each channel. Compare the difference of the SWR between 1 and 40. If the SWR is higher on 40 then 1, your antenna is too long. If your SWR is higher on 1 then 40 your antenna is too short. All CB antennas have a way to adjust the length.

If its a mag mount, its usually a set screw you loosen to raise or lower the whip. Fiberglass antenna's usually have something under the cap at the tip to adjust. It will either be like the mag mount, with a set screw and a small rod to raise or lower it, or a screw, that you screw in or out to make it longer or shorter.

make small adjustments. 1/8th or a 1/4 of an inch at a time. Each time you make a change, take an SWR reading on 1 and 40 again and compare the difference. The difference should be getting less. Do this until there is very little or no difference between 1 and 40.

Then you go back to 20, because it is the center channel and check the SWR there. It should now be low. If you did a good job it will be under 1.5 and you are good to go.

Swr to high when i hook up anything in line.

First I would recommend a new COAX cable. RG58 and no less. What antenna are you using and is it mobile or a base CB? Mobile antennas often times have to be tuned. Either by the tip which sometimes screws in and out. Other times it may have to be physically cut. Depending on the SWR. If your SWR is high then trim it by 1/4" and recheck. If it is too low the the antenna must be longer. Also SWR meters do go bad. Make sure you are using a functioning one. If you have further questions or input let me know.

High swr's on cobra 29 ltd

Check your antenna. Make sure it is getting a proper ground. If mag mount; make sure base of antenna and where you put it are both super clean. Check where whip goes into coil or base. Make sure all allen screws are tight and whip is not either all the way down to the base or up to the top. If antenna is mounted; make sure that it has a good ground. You might have to remove some paint around the base to get a good connection. DO NOT TRANSMIT WITH A HIGH SWR. YOU CAN BURN OUT THE EXPENSIVE POWER OUTPUT TRANSISTOR. Hope it helps.

I am getting high swr readings on my base station antenna. It is a 102'' whip and I don't think I have it connected properly. I connected the center copper wire to the antenna but did nothing with the...

what i would do is go and buy a real cb antenna mount like a mirror mount and get a peice of sheet metal and screw the mount to the metal and screw that to the roof or side of the house and you should buy a spring that will also help with the swr and if you by the mount you can just screw on a standard pl259 connector

Can't help you there. It's most likely that you screwed the modulator up by extending the frequency range. I used to work for Galaxy and I know what happens to a radio when amateurs try to modify them (no offense). If you modify a high power radio such as your Super Star, you're bound to have modulation and SWR problems. In expert advice, never do amateur radio modifications to a high power radio. If you want a more versatile radio, get a Galaxy DX 2517 CB base station. The DX 2517 has PA/FM/AM/SSB/USB/LSB/CW modes, and bands A-F, and a frequency range from 25.615 to 29.205 MHz. The Galaxy DX 2517 has modifications that can be done right at the factory, they are optional however. The only thing I find annoying with the DX 2517 is that it's bulky, it leaves no room for any competition. When it was designed, the engineers left space saving out of the question.
Anyway, Good luck
and
Best Regards,
