Nikon 2.8 lenses for digital are great i have 5.... But not cheap! You pay for the optical quality ( extremely high and the speed of the lens 2.8), lets in so much extra light. Ian

Do the older zoom lenses from the film cameras work with any of the newer digital cameras? I have 2 promaster lenses and didn't want to throw without checking.

In general, yes. The camera manufacturers did not change the lens mount when then went from film to digital, so as not to obsolete their own lenses. So if your lenses have a Nikon mount, for example, they will work on a Nikon digital camera.

Buying an SLR digital camera

Hard to tell, but I'd give a slight advantage to the Canon 1000D over the Nikon D60 (closest competitor) for 2 main reasons. The Canon has liveview which the D60 lacks and the Canon is largely backwards compatible with older Canon and third party lenses - so you can get good quality older lenses which will work perfectly with the 1000D. With Nikon on the other hand you need to either buy lenses with internal autofocus motors or you'll be stuck with only manual focus.

Besides that there's not really much difference, since both cameras produce great images and are very similar in features handling and price etc. To sum it all up - I suggest you go with the Canon.

Hope that helps with your decision.

Can you fit canon eos 888 lenses on nikon d3000

No. Nikon bodies are slightly thicker than Canon bodies. This allows a thin mount to adapt Nikon lenses to Canon bodies and still allow focusing to infinity. While an adapter for Canon lenses to Nikon bodies is theoretically possible, it would not allow the lens to focus to infinity. Thus, no one bothers to make one.

I have 2 quantaray lenses which I brought with my 35mm SRL are these lenses compatiable with Digital SRL cameras???

Which type of lens mount, what digital camera.
Nikons will fit older Nikon lenses.
Canon it seems only fits AF lenses
Olympus digital only takes their own new mounts.
Minolta lenses will fit the new Sony/Minolta digitals.
Pentax digital will take any K-mount or older thread mount. Need to change some menu setting though. Need a K to 42mm for the thread mounts.
Mounts are all different, so a Canon won't fit a Nikon, Sony or Pentax and vise versa.

I'm planning to buy a DSLR but confused what to buy

You have named several excellent digital SLR cameras aimed at the top end of the amateur/semi professional market.
I have the Nikon D200 and have been very pleased with it.
As stated by JCDill, you must really decide what you want and can afford. The camera body you choose will commit you down one path or another. For example, if you choose Canon, only Canon or OEM (Other Equipment Manufacturers) such as Sigma lenses will fit your camera body. Canon have a good reputation for their auto-focus, while Nikon make lenses that are the envy of others.
If this is your first digital SLR then you might be best buying an entry level body with a multi-purpose zoom lens such as the Nikon D40. There is a lot to learn.
If you are converting from film SLR and already have a set of lenses, then the cameras you mentioned will probably be able to use your existing lenses (but this is less so with Canon than Nikon). I was ecstatic to disover that my old Nikon 500mm mirror lens works in manual mode (with metering displayed) on my Nikon D200 but would not work properly on my Nikon D70.
I hope this helps.

D40x Camera with mirror lens = black pictures

Usually tele lenses need longer exposure, and mirror lenses need more than normal lenses.Try with 1sec, half sec,( 2 in the speed dial, not 2" ) or quarter sec (4 in the speed dial) exposures.

One more thing, you need good sturdy stands to hold cameras.
