My Canon Pixma MX310 prints everything too light. It seems as though it's in some kind of ink-saving mode or something. For instance, instead of printing standard text docs in black, it prints in very light gray. I have tried adjusting darkness and contrast settings and though it makes it a little bit darker, the same problem persists. I just changed the ink cartridges. I have a Mac if that helps. Thanks! -Ross

Thanks for the quick response.  First, I don't have the manual.  Any way to get one for free online?  Second, this does not seem to be a maintenance issue.  I've had the printer for less than a year I have hardly ever used it for printing (mostly just scanning).

  • rossebyrd May 18, 2009

Oh never mind.  I understand what you mean.  Okay, I am running the maintenance stuff.  In the nozzle test, the black printed fine.  What's up with that?

  • rossebyrd May 18, 2009

Yes, both work fine in all the tests.  I probably should have discovered this earlier, but it turns out the printing-too-light problem is actually only occurring with SOME pdf documents. Word is printing fine.  But with some pdf docs that print normally on my other printer and are obviously standard black text are printing in this really light gray as though they're printing on wax paper or something. It's weird.

  • rossebyrd May 18, 2009

Yeah, this is obviously a very odd problem.  I'm actually using Preview for Mac.  The same pdf files that print black on my hp printer are printing extremely light gray on my canon so it seems to be a printer issue, but perhaps it is an issue that is too unusual to figure out.

Hi, look in your manual and do all the maintenance and head cleaning modes, once you have your results like head alignment you will be-able to detect the problem.

do both your ink cartarages work black and color?

  • Anonymous May 18, 2009

that is odd, check your printer settings in the acrobat adobe application, if your printer is printing correctly on msword then its working.

  • Anonymous May 18, 2009

try a hard reset unplug the printer for 30mins and try again, this will reset the printer's hardware.

or in this case try to 'reset the ink cartrages' this will work :-

    To Reset the Canon Cartridges

    Power off the printer

Hold the stop/reset button then press and hold power (for 5 secs)

Hold Power and release the stop/reset button

    Press the stop/reset button twice
    Release power button
Wait until the power button lights a steady/still green, press the stop/reset button three times with a

3 sec space between each press.

On the 3rd press the indicator should be orange.

Press the power button to set data

To set data remove cartridges then replace.

leave for 20 or 30 secs

Press the power button again to shut down

Then press power button to power up.

The printer will feed one piece of paper through

    then set language and country.

    Then ink should be reset

    Have a go good luck.

Refurb. Ink cartridge problems

Make certain that the labels on the cartridges are in the right postion. For instance the PG40 label should be near the two lugs at the top and NOT near the curved lug. It seems that the chip is near the curved lug maybe in the circular indent.

Canon Pixma 9500 suddenly starts producing light prints

I'm not sure if this is possible with the 9500 (it won't be if the 9500 uses chipped cartridges)...

But have you installed the photo version of a Magenta or Cyan in the Non-phone cartridge... ie: PM instead of M, or PC instead of C.

It's a long shot as I don't know that particular models age, etc... but it's been done (by me included *blush*).

Canon mx310 feeds paper w/out printing

Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Canon PIXMA MX310 All-In-One - faxes storing instead of printing

When the machine is in one of the following situations, the fax is automatically stored in memory.

- If ink is low or has run out while receiving a fax
- If the paper size/type setting is incorrect
- If the paper has run out while receiving a fax
- If the Output Tray is closed
- If OFF is selected for AUTO PRINT RX
- If you pressed the Stop/Reset button to cancel printing of a fax

The most likely problem is that the ink is low.

You can change the settings to still print if the ink is low by pushing the fax button and then the menu button.

Scroll over until you get to RX settings (I think it is the 6th option) and push OK.

Choose the option to Auto Print RX, and press OK.

Make sure that On is selected and even if it already is the chosen option, press OK.

When the option appears to print with no ink, select yes. This will allow the fax to print even when the ink is low.
