Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

Dell Dimesion 4600-Yellow light after I added memory

Hi-I added memory to an old Dell and now a "yellow" light comes on when I power it up----It will not come on at all...any ideas?? Thanks!!! David

Take out the newly installed stick and see if it comes on.  if it does, find out if the memory and motherboard are compatible.  if your computer no longer boots even with the new stick taken out, you probably already burned your motherboard and the damage is irreversible.  it can also be a bad stick that you installed.

I have gone rounds with these dam dells and still have one sitting here that I have not fixed and i can tell you get a new box totally and put your hard drive in another one

If you haven't already: pull all pci cards:
If you pull the ram, and you get no beeps at post, it's likely the main board. Does the pc beep at all? with or without ram? If not, likely the main board. Sorry. Hope this helps...

Computer light flashes yellow when i press power button,blank screen

In order to fix the yellow flashing light please remove and reinstall the ram and graphic card
reset the cmos

Also refer to the Dells Technical Support troubleshooting steps:

It couold also be the front USB ports that some time causes the computer not to power on and the blinking yellow lights.

Computer will not turn on


  • Blinking Amber/yellow: Initial state of LED at power up.
    Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active.
    If the hard drive LED is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced.
    If the hard drive LED is on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 and it won't boot up. When I turn it on the green power light comes on and hard drive activity light flashes however no fans come on, the screen doesn't show the Dell logo or...


i would have to disagree with jerry, while that seems reasonable if the motherboard fan isn't running at all then whether or not the video card is ok is somewhat irrelevant.
I would agree somewhat though, i think the PSU might be a good thing to check to see if it is functional.
when you power it on does the CPU fan start or shudder at least ? that would be my first guess for a problem if you had been having any problems recently

Wont power up


Hi jgeorge76,

I'm sorry to tell you this, but the yellow light means that there is an internal power problem. Usually this problem is a worn-out power supply (the unit at the back of the computer near the top that the power cord plugs into), and it would explain why the computer won't turn on.

If your computer is still under warranty, I suggest you seek help from Dell. If not, don't worry -- a power supply is relatively inexpensive (around $30-40) and not too difficult to replace. You can easily purchase one online and install it yourself. Rest assured that your hard drive and all its contents are safe and intact; you just need to replace the power source.

Unplug the unit. Re-seat the Memory and Daughter-boards. Plug in and try to start.

Have you gone to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks in front of the usb devices?
