Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Trane XE100 and I am getting an icing condition resulting in a shutdown. The fan apparently was operating but not moving any air through the room vents. When I took a panel off the fan assembly I got plenty of air movement but also got the icing condition.

Sounds like you are low on freon or you have some type of obstruction that is blocking the full flow of air across the coil.
Go for the simple thing first which is make sure you don't have something blocking the flow (like one time I found a plastic bag from the grocery store that had been sucked into the return grill and when the fan came on it would lay on the A-coil blocking the flow).
If that's not the problem then you are probably low on freon and should have the system charged.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Tip

Water leak in split a/c.

When compressor pumps the vapor of the freon passes through condenser coil pipelines where the heat removed by fan and becomes low pressure low temp and then travels as liquid. By removal of heat in the room again the freon get vaporized and sent to compressor. In this cycling if your indoor coil is dust blocked the room heat can't be removed. resulting this the liquid becomes forming ice over the coil. And when it cut off by coil temp, the fan only will work and ice get defrosted and water spray thr' vent.Due to coil block and makes airlock to drain pipeline. Resulting to water leak inside. To avoid water leaking service your a/c periodically.

My ac unit is about 20 years old. it is frosting up now. should i replace it or fix it.

alot of items can cause it to frost up. dirty evaporator coil, dirty impellers on evaporator fan, low on freon, trying to operate system at to low a room temperture will result in pressure drop to a point that will form ice.

I get this message when I turn on my laptop. It's almost a year old. "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly. Continued operation is not recommended and may...

More that likely the fan is going out. Check the fan exhaust to see how much air it is moving if any. A laptop cooling pad will probably help out and possible prolong failure. If its under a year old, the maufacturer may fix it for you. You'll just have to contact HP and see if they will, or if they can get you a new fan to replace yourself if they wont do it for you.

The refrig on my trane xl1400 unit is not getting cold...the fan runs and I do not see icing?

compressor is either not running or out of freon, need to verify if compressor is operating by removing access cover's and using an amp probe clamp, verify that the compressor is operating, if not check electrical connections and capacitor which is required to start and run the compressor. Capacitors have more common failure rate than any other component.

I have a 20 year old Trane heat pump. Outside

Yes, you will want to put the unit into cooling mode to help assistance with the ice melt.

If you can, block off the outdoor coil or disconnect the outdoor fan motor. This will assist in raising the discharge pressure and temperature and thus, it will melt the ice quicker.

Or, if you have the capability, you can take a garden hose around to the unit hooked into hot water and melt the ice that way.

If your control board is messed up, why aren't you replacing it?

Trane air handler cycling rapidly

Depending on the age of your Trane unit. The fan relay has a time delay. This is a solid state board on the relay. Most of the time they stick on or off. Check for loose wires. But start with relay.
