Start with the simple. Check cable connections to your computer. Check volume level on computer and monitor. Try a set of headphones to see if you can get volume that way. If you can hear on your headphones and not on the computer then you know that your problem lies in the monitor itself.
Try using headphones in the socket that the speakers are connected to. If you hear sound on the headphones then the socket is working. If no sound then check you are using the correct socket - usually coloured lght green.
unplug your headphones, and plug the speaker cord into that jack. its possible that the speakers you are using require power either by a cord or batteries and without them, it wont play sound. also, possible, your speakers are bad.
1. you headphone is a problem(broken) try to plug it on another computer or television, if the same then get new one.

2.open volume panel. double click on the volume icon on the taskbar there will be headphone icon, if not select option, check all the box, maximize all volume, remember the upper volume control(horzontal) must be in the middle.
if you using realtek, open by double click the icon, and select headphone.
As soon as you connect your headphones to your laptop,some options wil come regarding the mike system,in that you choose the headphone option to get sound only in headphones OR By clicking on the speaker icon and selecting the Mixer button, you should be able to turn off the other outputs.
