P4 System with Intel D865GBF Socket 478 will reboot on shutdown

Built this system sometime ago. Has Intel D865GBF Mboard socket 478 with Intel p4 2.40A Processor (1MB L2 cache). Has 2GB Kingston memory (1 GB of Dual PC2700 and 1GB of mixed Kingston PC2700 Valueram). This is a warranty replacement board (with a refurb). Dropped it back into the case about a year and a half ago. The original retail board had a similar problem. All that the Tech guy did was to have me update the bios and reseat the current memory and try another stick. Ok, nothing he suggested worked so he had me rma the board. The replacement board started doing the reboots about 1or 2 months ago. I installed a program that froze up windows. When I unfroze it and restored to the pre-install, the reboots started. I hoped that it was a Windows problem and when I finally reinstalled windows this past weekend, the problem seemed to go away. Unfortunately, I was importing my wife's Firefox profile backup (Using the FEBE extention). The system froze up (jBTW, the same thing happened when I put her firefox profile on her new netbook. Her system froze. However, the netbook did not start rebooting) Well, wouldn't you know, the reboots started again. I wiped the drives, repartitioned them, even tested them using Maxblast. Put a vanilla Windows install on the computer and unfortunaely the reboots were more prevalent than before. Is there something that I haven't thought of here? I can understand a problem with 1 board. However, this is an INTEL board! I boaught the Intel for the stability an quality reputation. It is not likely that the same problem (supposed to beVERY uncommon) would occur with 2 boards owned by the same person. I know that Tech guys will quite often do a few things then punt to RMA to cut down on call time. This suggests that there might be a fix. I don't know, maybe a bios recovery? Would another piece of hardware cause this to happen? All that I know is that it went away for a while, then returned when a strain to the system occurred. Not conclusive, may be just a coincidence. However, I would appreciate any helpful recommendations.

BTW, replacing the system is not currently an option. We both are now between employment. This adds some urgency to problem solving solutions.

Thanks!

Start with a minimum system. just enough to boot the machine. no nsound or modem or nic'sw unle3ss they're integrated. use all like memory.. preferably 1 chip. update the bios to the latest greatest version. speaking of which. what windows r u running? nt4, y2k , xp home, xp pro , xp enterprise, vista?
ne way attempt to boot with just the hard drive.. dont attach any other cables.. (floppy, cd. etc) if you can boot into the system add the other items to the system one by one rebooting each ntime with each new item. you'll find the device thats causing the problem..if it's a hardware issue. if it does the reboot
it may well be the os.. try safe mode... i know for example y2k and my p4 wouldnt let a diamond stealth s540 video and the creative labs pci 64 sound card be in the same system.. they locked it or blue screened it everytime.. or it'd reboot.. anyway..good luck..

On the Board are 5 Black condenser 820 uF 6,3 V with lower Capacity,
3 beside the Processor, 2 right and left near the RAM,
The new must be Low-ESR- Elektolytcondenser.
I had the same Problem,

SOURCE: P4 System w/ Intel D865GBF Sckt 478 reboots on shutdown

it sounds like a component is overheating.  clean out all the dust from all the components and make sure the case is getting positive air pressure (more fans blowing in than out) as opposed to negative (more fans blowing out than in).  if you don't have more than one fan, then get some at newegg.com since you're running an old p4 which isnt exactly notable for its efficiency in power use (and consequently temperature).  if you're running a discrete graphics card as well, you'll want to make sure thats keeping cool.  since it isn't windows, these two components are the most likely above all other suspects.

Motherboard ID Motherboard Name Compaq Evo

as long as it is a socket 478 processor which narrows it down to P4 or celeron ( P4 being better and faster ) it should be fine.
Obviously it will state what processors it can handle in the computer manual so if you find the manual it should state in there.
I dont think it will handle more then a 3ghz P4

P4 ugrade required

Sadly you wont find any 1066Mhz FSB processors for the Socket 478. The best you can find is the 3.4Ghz with 800Mhz FSB. It might be cheaper and also better value for you to get a Socket 775 based motherboard and Core2 Duo processor. The value range E2160/2180 processors or the E4300/4400 processors have been tested to be even faster than the Socket 775 Pentium Dual 3.4Ghz and they also use less power.
