Common Problem with AIWA 3 disc machines. I have 3 in my service shop right now. For tray not rolling in on it's own, the drive rollers have to be changed, along with the Drive Belt. Also, for CD not reading, try CD lens cleaner.

SOURCE: AIWA CD Problems

Sounds like the lasers need a POT (potentiometer) adjustment. Tools you will need are a multimeter with Ohms (preferably digital) either a #1 or #00 and #2 philips screwdriver. You will need access to the bottom of the laser. On the units I've worked on the POT faces the back of the unit. It will look like a philips head screw in a square metal casing. You should not need to completely remove the CD tray assembly but you can if you wish though I recommend removing the tray bezel Look for two legs on the side of the POT casing that go to the laser PCB. Measure the resistance across the two legs for an initial reading. On mine it was exactly 1kOhm. Now take the #1 or #00 philip screwdriver and adjust the screw to lower the resistance. POT screws are typically EXTREMELY sensitive so 1/16 of a turn can make a big difference. Start by lowering it by about 20-25%. So if the initial reading was 1kOhm aim for 750-800Ohms and test. You should use several disks for testing. If your unit is capable of CD-R/RW playback then have those available as they are generally more difficult to read. If you have playback gradually increase the resistance 5-10% until the disk is no longer readable or struggles to read. Now lower the resistance again 5-10% and retest. If all works well reassemble and enjoy. It is necessary NOT to lower the resistance too much as it will shorten the life of the laser and if too low could damage the disks. If you must go lower than 25-30% the laser is not worth salvaging. Typically 10-15% is all that is required. If you need more detail I recommend doing a search for 'xbox POT adjustment' as the procedure is essentially the same for all lasers and some xbox sites have good pictures so you can see what your doing before you dive in. Total repair time per unit will be 1/2 - 1hr, mostly spent in all the testing. Hope this helps. Good luck

SOURCE: How to play CD on Aiwa NSX-3500 (part of CX-N3500U) w/o remote control?

I thought that I had the same problem. I then discovered that when I put 3 CD's in it started up on it's own. If you push the demo button you can see how it's supposed to light up the number of tracks in a square on the right of the display. It wasn't doing that until I put in all 3. Then it started up and I was able to use the disc 1, 2 & 3 buttons to change from 1 CD to the next and I used the Up and Down buttons to change songs and the play button above the tape deck is multi-functional. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a NSX-V70 stereo. Tapes and CD do not work, FM/AM is fine

Your unit needs a little TLC. Let me address the likely problems/solutions:

1) Tape deck stuck - The most common problem here is that the belt has gotten slippery. This has prevented the mechanism from resetting to a known position and that is what prevents the door from opening. Hopefully when you pried it open, nothing bot broken.

2) Both tape drives run from the same motor and use different belts. The same applies to the second deck as the first. The belts are sliping and need to be replaced.

3) The CD lens is probably dirty and needs to be cleaned. The fact that the CD stops and an attempt is made to play it suggests that the optics are working enough to detect the disc. Clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol and that should resoplve the CD problem.

If you have not opened up these before, I would not suggest you start without someone around who has. There are 3 belts that need to be chagned for the cassette section to work. Plan on $15-$20 for the belts.
