the newer type motors have carbons tht are fixed in place you would need to remove the motor and on either side will be the carbons they need to be un-screwed to be replaced

you seem to know what your doing. yes you do have to remove the motor in order to remove those carbon brushes, while your at it, you can also adjust the screwing/bearings of the bolts to hinder the machine from moving a lot.

SOURCE: How to cahnge carbon brushes
The brushes usually "come complete with brush-holders", which is a way of selling you something extra that you don't need. Easiest way is to disconnect the machine from the power and the water, turn it onto its front on an old cardboard box and remove the motor from its mountings on the washer. You can usually get acces to one of the brushes really easily and the other is guaranteed to be a real pig, so keep it simple. The brush-holders are usually fastened to the motor casing with either self-tapping screws or small bolts.
I buy my brushes from Ebay sellers and always send them a digital photo of the old brush together with the make and serial number off the motor itself, just to be sure. Brushes can look similar and be that silly millimetre too short, or long, or wide.
Did that answer the question? If not, add a comment and I'll expand further as necessary. Cheers, D.
