If it is just loose wiring connections then you may be able to get it running again , but if fault is on heater coil then it may need replacement and it is costly//

SOURCE: Our electric water heater doesn't work.

make sure it is wired correctly, check circuit breaker, check breaker built on to element. If all fails, and it is determined your not getting power to it, you may need a electrician. Be careful. good luck.

SOURCE: Water works on electric but not on gas it will light but will not keep running

It sounds like your thermal coupler needs to be replaced or maybe just cleaned. P.S. have you tried a different LP tank If its new or the person didn't pressurize the tank when filled you may not have pressure enough to keep the water heater lit.

You probably need new electric valve. Check to see if you have power to the valve. You can take valve out and try to clean it

Honeywell WV8840B1109 temp control valve on water heater. Status light @ 4 blinks between 3 seconds indicating "high temperature shutdown" even though lighting pilot with water cold. .

II have exactly the same problem: Honeywell WV8840B1109 temp
control valve on water heater. Pilot is on, but the burner won't
no matter how high I turn the temperature knob. Status light blink
4, which by the controller is "high temperature shutdown" and has
nothing to do with the problem. The real problem is that the
computer chip in the controller has gone bad. Problem is solved by
changing a new gas control valve/thermostat. The old Honeywell
control valve uses pure mechanical stuff and was very reliable,
almost never has a problem. I don't understand why they switch to
this new electrical one which use the tiny voltage generated by
the thermopile to run, easy to break, because of the electric
chips, and is more expensive. The only reason I can think of is
that they want to get more money from our pocket.

Pilot light goes out when i release the button

Question posted under Reliance gas water heater.
Add comment for different brand.
Age of heater is unknown.
Status light indicates one of the Honeywell electronic gas control valve.
Status light not blinking indicates that water heater gas control not receiving electrical power for power vent models.
Or thermocouple is bad on non-power vent models
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

Depending on model, and age, the thermocouple can be tested and replaced. Or entire burner assembly is replaced.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

If the gas control valve has gone bad because of power surge or other anomaly, then the power-vent type gas control is removed from tank and replaced, while the non-power-vent model is module and can be snapped off front of unit.

Turned down temp on Water Heater a little, and now we are not getting any hot water. Not even Warm. Whats wrong?

For electric tank: Push in the reset button located on upper thermostat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-water-heater.html

For gas tank, then more specific information might be needed for example if unit has power vent, when was the air intake cleaned, is the pilot lit, what brand and model number etc etc..
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html

For tankless, or solar, or hybrid electric, gas boiler, or indirect, or RV heater, etc then please include brand, and model that appears on label on side of unit.

No hot water from my Rheem 72-40-1, I replaced the bottom element a couple of times now in the last 4 months. I replaced the bottom element last night and for the first time opened the top cover to see...

Open following link to look at thermostat wiring
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-water-heater-thermostats.html

If you have dual element electric water heater, then that is a 240Volt water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/240-v-water-heater-circuit.html

If you are replacing lower element several times, are you also cleaning out the tank?
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

Are you installing same wattage element shown on label on side of tank: Should be 4500Watts.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Figure-Volts-Amps-Watts-for-water-heater.html

If upper element burns out, then tank will have no hot water:
