How to replace filter sand

  1. Open air relief and drain plug to allow air into filter and water out.
  2. Take apart filter, remove all nuts/bolts/screws/fasteners and separate the filter. Could need some force to separate
  3. Use a shop vac to suck out the sand or a cup, be careful not to be too violent, if you damage laterals sand will go into the pool
  4. Check the laterals, No cracks or damage
  5. Close drain plug.
  6. Go to pool/home store buy POOL SAND. Amount required should should be posted on the filter somewhere. any extra will go into pool, or backwash out.
  7. Add some water about halfway of the filter, slowly add sand back into filter, dont be too violent. be careful not to get sand into any piping it will go back into pool.
  8. Prime the pump(add water to it) backwash the filter for 2~3 minutes
  9. Close air relief
  10. Run pump on normal open air relief as need to let excess air out .
Done!

Our pool is about 90000 litres of water so how big filter do we need please

If you have a above ground pool go with the Cartridge or sand, and if underground go sand or D.E. All have their ups and down you should find out what you want from them specifically cause they all do varying amounts of the same thing.

Sand Filters
(Filters using literally sand)
For sand filters, on inground pools, I like to use a 30 inch tank diameter, which is a 4.9 sq. ft. filter surface area, and holds 600 lbs of sand. For small pools (under 20,000 gals), I might advise the next size down (24 inch tank), if the budget is tight. But never go smaller than a this for an inground pool.
Cartridge Filters (like a air filter)
I have a rule of thumb for cartridge pool filters. 100 sq. ft. of filter surface area per 10,000 gals of pool water, as a minimum. I like to see the 400 sq. ft. models on inground pools above 25,000 gals. These can go an entire season without cleaning in most cases.
D.E. Filters (Ground up fossilized algae)
Because they offer the most superior type of filtration, people tend to go small with DE, and buy a 24 or 36 sq. ft. DE filter. Ugh - go Big! Nothing below a 48 sq. ft. filter, and if your pool is over 25,000 gals, go with the Big Boy - the 60 sq. ft. filter.

Also make sure the filter can take the amount of water that the pump is pushing through it.

Can the filter blow sand into the pool?

If you are using a sand filter and if the plumbing is incorrect you can flush sand into the pool instead of flushing dirt down the drain. If you are using a sand filter and the sand support screen material is torn you can get sand into the pool.

Sand coming into pool when set on filter and when back wash and rinse? How do I stop this?

Sand can be sent to the pool for several reasons. If it is piped in reverse, if the laterals, their manifold, pipes connected to the manifold is damaged or there is a problem in the backwash valve. The water from the filter enters the filter above the sand where it soaks through the sand, through the laterals and out the return pipe to the filter. If the water is flowing from the pool into the laterals and through the sand and into the pool some sand will go with the water into the pool. In addition, the laterals will get filled with dirt from the pool. The best way to know if there is a damaged lateral, manifold or pipe is to remove most of the sand and inspect these parts. After the filter is worked on, If some sand was in the laterals, manifold or pipes when a system is started it should be sent into the pool and find can then be brushed into the main drain and be caught in the filter. I hope this helps.

I just finished cleaning my pool when I noticed debris around the area where my inground pool jets are. So I backwashed and vacuum that area. However, once in filter mode I noticed sand at the bottom of...

When sand comes back from the filter, that means that the device inside the filter that keeps the sand in has broken. In order to replace the item, all of the sand must be removed and the tubes must be removed and new ones installed. Go to your local pool supply house with your filter information and they can show you how to remove your old units and they will sell you new ones. You only have to replace the ones that are broken.

Sand from filter in pool

Have you vacuumed the sand out of the pool and it has continued to happen? If so, I think it is probably going to be an issue with your pool filters multi-port valve. Check the valve and if any part of it is damaged, it should be replaced. This will be a much cheaper solution than replacing the entire filter. It could also possibly be a broken lateral on the inside of the filter that is letting the sand into your pool water.

I seem to have sand in my pool

If you are seeing sand in your pool, 2 things could be going on, first have you back washed filter, it could need cleaning, second you have a hole in one of the filter internal baffles letting sand in pool. I would backwash first, if still happens take filter apart clean everything, check baffles, if any holes replace them, fill with new sand, your filter cover has a tag on it and tells you how much sand you need. Then restart. You are done.
