SOURCE: stripped bar stud

Many Sthil chainsaws have replaceable bar studs. The stud threads into the case. Go here: http://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=QA+0000+953+6605&catID=407
look for part by model number, usually no more than a few dollars. Enjoy

You need to disassemble the case to get to the fuel tank. Pull out the plug fitting and replace the internals with new factory grade parts.

The main reason for a chain to tighten is because it is not getting enough oil to the bar, or too thin an oil is being used, you should see a good spray of oil off the end of the bar when held against a tree stump, if not try adjusting the flow if it has an adjuster.

McCulloch 14" chain saw Model CS 38 EM It quit

Most often there is a dust-oil clog in the bottom of the bar slot which closes an oil passage between the bar slot and the hole drilled half way through the side of the bar. This provides a passage between the thin shim plate with the two bar bolt holes beside the bar and through to the oil tank or pump output. You can remove the bar and chain and punch out the blockage in the bar with a paper clip if the chain is removed. Make sure the wire can be pushed from the bar slot right through the side hole in the bar. A gravity feed chainsaw should leak right out into the slot of the shim plate, a button pumper should squirt out there with the bar removed. With a button pumper you may have a tiny check valve in the line or the push button to take apart, replace the spring or unstick the ball inside the check valve. This is why they went to the gravity feed oil system which just leaks in there and gets picked up by the bottom of the links as the chain races past the passage between the bar side hole and the chain slot.

I was given a McCuloch 400039b, electric chain saw. I need to know what oil is required and how much.

If this is an electric saw, then the only oil typically needed is to lubricate the chain and bar. You should buy specific "bar oil". Other oils are not as tacky and will sling off the end of the chain causing it to heat up and stretch.

McCulloch 610 no oil coming out on chain

Oil System Plugged.
A blunted, hooked piece of wire can be used to pull the hose in the oil tank out. I recommend the filter be replaced. Work your way through the linkage cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (probably left handed thread). The saw can be operated without the bar and chain to verify oiler operation. Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly. GL

remove side cover, bar & chain.above bar mounting studs find a oblong channel that lines up w/ the small holes in the bar.clean everything, sawdust gets packed in the holes.if it leaks oil out the bottom, you need to replace the oil feed line fom the tank.

McCulloch Pro Mac 610 replacement chain

The McCulloch ProMac 600 series (610/650) doesn't recommend a saw chain replacement part because you can get differently-sized bars for it. This one came with a 20" bar.
According to an Amazon.com search tonight, the Oregon company makes a replacement part stock number D70. I have got an Oregon H78 replacement chain at my hardware store and it's a hair too small. Not all 20" saw chains are created equal!!
