Yes, you can load the map of "southern Africa" which includes South Africa. Go to the tomtom website ... click Maps ... look for "Map of the World" ... and look for Southern Africa.
Then you can purchase the map ...and, download it to your TomTom ...
Go to Garmin.com, click on Maps > Buy Maps. Enter your model number, then tell them where you are going and they will give you the options to either buy an SD card with the maps or buy a CD with the maps on it. The easiest is the SD card. Plug that into your unit, go to Maps Settings, and tell the unit to show the maps for South Africa.

I took the Garmin back to the retailer and they gave me a new memory card, seems like the other card did not have any maps stored on. Garmin is now working 100%.
She can purchase the City Navigator Australia DVD and load the Australian maps onto an SD card. Insert this into the unit and she'll then have both S Africa and Australia maps.
