Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 Digital Camera

Sony Cybershot camera will no longer take pictures. When turned on the lens keeps opening and closing and the screen says ACCESS. Then it says shut off camera. The battery is fully charged, not sure what the problem is? The camera is 2 1/2 years old, is that the life span of a digital camera?

Sony Cybershot DSC-W55: able to view and download pics, but when trying to take a pic the screen reads 'Access', the lens opens & closes constantly and then it tells me to turn the power button on and off. I do that and get the same problem.

I had the same problem. I looked at FixYa some months back and found the solution. Give the camera a jolt against something hard. . . has worked for me several times.

Your lens has a grain of grit in it. Try assisting the lens gently side to side and see if that frees the debris.

It seems that some small part inside the lens is broken and prevents moving. Usually not fixable by user :-( I am afraid you will need help of service personnel.

Please try Power Resetting the Camera.
To Power Reset the Camera, First, please turn OFF the Camera.
Then, remove the battery pack from the Camera.
Then, press and hold the POWER button on the Camera for 30 seconds.
Then, reinsert the battery pack and check whether the issue is resolved.

Sony Cybershot Lens Stuck inside!!!

I have the exact same problem with my Cyber-shot; the lens is stuck inside. After trying everything to loosen it (like wedging a razor knife between the sections, even dropping it or banging it against a book, etc) non of which I recommend, I finally got it open by PUSHING on the black telescoping section surrounding the lens itself. For some reason, this worked!

Your camera has problem in Lens mechanism. If Lens doesn't open properly, camera will not show picture at all. There would be Loading Motor section demaged in Lens mechanism and it needs to be replaced to work camera OK.
Now come to blue screen in playback mode, This model doesn't have internal memory, so you need memory stick/ card to see previously taken pictures.

This is what sony cameras do when the lens has become jammed. There are multiple different reasons that the lens can jam but the result is the camera being unable to move it as expected and presenting that error message. Sometimes the lens can be manipulated gently (if extended at all) and freed from the jammed state. Failing this, disassembly is required. Check with your manufacturer for warranty service status and recalls. If they will not cover it you can find a repair provider online. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
