Dark Shaded Rectangle in the middle

My Sony PFM 42B1 shows dark shaded rectangle in the middle of the screen.  It doesn't happen if I use Component Input.  However, if I use it happens when I use S video.

Check the settings for the input and make sure captioning is not on....text mode does this on mine, figured it out after hours of pulling hair out...

The dark rectangle appears because you have the closed captions on and set to TEXT. Closed captions set to CC1 puts the words on the screen and TEXT puts a black box on the screen. Go into the menu, navigate to the page with closed captions and set your captions to OFF.

you have to open the back cover to check weather the screen back light need replacement. usually if the lamp is almost black in color it needs replacement. the backlight is covered with metal shield installed at the upper portion and lower portion of the panel of the tv.

I have a 42" Sony Plasma Model# PFM-42B1 was watching tv when picture went out. Red standby light keeps flashing. Was told to unplug for 5 hours then plug back in & count how many times it blinks,...

There are a number reasons why this might happen:
  • The backlight has gone (Find a dark place and shine a torch into the screen and see if you can see an image in the background, if you see an image then the backlight has gone) - Needs a new backlight (Engineer to remove and fit) or have a new panel fitted.
  • The panel has died - Need a new panel
  • A cable has worked itself loose or is broken
  • The inverter has gone - Need new inverter
  • The driver board is faulty

Looks like you have a burned lamp.
Most LCDs have a lamp that lights the screen's image.
If you see the image, but its too need a lamp replacement.

Sony pfm 42b1 negative picture

I have a Sony PFM-42v1 and it does the same thing, look in your tv menu for picture inversion, usually under screen saver. What it actually does is reduce the chance of screen burnin. By reversing the image it sort of resets the hot areas, brightest colours and the cooler areas being dark colours, switches them around ( negative ). This cools the hot spots and heats up the cold spots.

There should be a option to turn it off, mine and I guess yours as a default is ON, mine has the ON, timer and OFF options.

Hope this helps, please let me know if you need more info.

Dark Translucent Rectangle appears in front of picture

Go into the customer menu and find the "closed captions" heading. Within the closed caption you will find "TEXT". If you turn off closed captions or the text, whichever you menu lets you do, your rectangle will go away. Hope this helps
