Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

3 Answers

I have a Craftsman model number 917.256552 with a Kohler 15ho OHV engine and it is about 11 years old. The engine starts and runs fine. When I engage the clutch or attempted to engage the blades, the engine stalls. This happaned from one day to the next as there were no warning signs. The seat weight safety feature seems to be working properly. I even jumped the switch just in case - this didn't work. (What is the proper way of jumping a switch?) Is there any other safety switches that I should be looking for? If so, where are they located and how can I jump the switch? Regards, Dave

Don't what? Can you further explain your answer?

How do I know if the switch is bad? I don't want to buy a switch just to try it.

As i have indicated in my question, is there any other safety switches that I can try? Is there a safety switch for the clutch? Where are they located? Do you have a wiring diagram?

    Regards

The starter is fine. The engine starts with no problem.

The engine only stops when the clutch or blades are enagaged. The engine will stay running all day if I leave idiling.

This is the ONLY thing on the tractor that prevents the blades from spinning (as long as the drive belts are good.
To jumper the switch - disconnect it and connect the 2 ends of the cut wire together.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Has the starter gear been replaced If so check the amount of teeth are right for your flywheel if not is it worn down or broken teeth, If you didnt jump start your mower with a car then your starter is most likely ok,check your connections are clean ground. Last thing is that these engines have a compression release inside engine so starter is able to turn engine over hardly ever goes bad

check the wires from the back of the ignition and also the small wire
that connects to the starter, if you get a 12v test light check each
wire individually by holding the test light on the wire and have
somebody turn the key, the test light should come on if the power is
    going through the wire.

If there is no power the ignition may need replacing

Hi there,

Don't! The switch controls the electrical paths in the whole machine. Unless you have a wiring diagram and know how to read it, just go get a new switch. They don't cost more than $50 and that is cheaper than trying something and causing so much damage to the mower that you cant use it due to a wrong wire placement.

What to do? I have a craftsman GT 5000 with a 25 HP Kohler and it will run for about 10 minutes and then start cutting out and die. I have changed the fuel filter with no resolve. What should I look at...

Make sure the choke is coming off. Check the compression. Many times the head gasket may leak when the engine heats up. Also check for spark sometimes the magneto can heat up and quit after running a while. See if it will run if you prime with a little fuel, if so ,some of the Kohler engines this size have a fuel pump that could be failing. Check for vapor lock. It takes air and fuel properly mixed, spark and compression any of these missing the engine dies.

I have a craftsman gt 6000 with kohler 18 hp magnum today it started fine and ran goodd for over an hour i put gas in it and ti would not stay runing it stated surging and popping and cuts off

Your carb is full of trash. you also probaly need to clean out the bottom of your fuel tank, blow out your lines and replace the fuel filter. I have 2 mowers with kohler engines and clean out the fuel tanks fuel lines and carbs 1 time a year. There is also a fuel shut solenoid on the carb this is normally problem if the engine does not run. but I am certain your problem is a simple fix, all you have to do is clean everything out in the fuel system.

Can you give me a ballpark figure on replacing a head gasket on a older Craftsman riding lawn mower...

there are many variables, since you didn't give any specifics. if it is an older, single cylinder, L-head engine, labor would be roughly 1/2 hour; if an older twin, L-head, about 1 hour; if it's a kohler, add about 1/2 hour; if it's a single, OHV, about 1 hour; if a twin OHV, 1 1/2 hours; if a kohler, add 1/2 hour. each shop has it's own labor rate. flat rate manuals will vary and are not realistic when dealing with old, possibly rusted or frozen bolts, which will increase the cost of repair. a new head gasket will usually cost between $5 to $30, depending on which engine you have. {some older craftsmans had a briggs laid sideways or an onan. these will require a lot more work and the labor would be higher]
