Question about Kenmore 56549 / 56542 / 56544 / 56546 Side by Side Refrigerator
Now i hear a click then buzz then click. compressor gets warm but fridge is still freezing and cooling. should i replace the compressor starter because it rattles when shaken?
It might be on the way out I would get the new relay and have it ready when the box fails. leave it be till it goes on out. But be ready. If it was bad it would either not do nothing or overheat and shut off.

SOURCE: Refrigerator buzzes & clicks
The only thing a capacitor does is 'kick' the compressor to start it. There is a box on the compressor containing the start relay. If it is defective or dirty, it might buzz. With the power off, find it, remove its cover and use some canned air to blow off any dirt inside. If that doesn't fix it, replace it. If there is a fan down there, be careful...and be sure it is working.

IF IS NOT 5 YEARS OLD YET CALL A TECH ASAP THIS MODELS HAVE A COMPRESSOR THAT ARE FAMOUS FOR LOCKING UP AND THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE IT BUT FIRST DISCONNECT AND REMOVE BACK COVER AND RIGHT BY THE COMPRESSOR THERE IS A SMALL BOX ATTACHED TO IT CALL A OVERLOAD REMOVE IT AND SHAKE IT IS IF RATTLES THEN JUST REPLACE THAT PART IF IT DOESNT RATTLE CALL A TECH

SOURCE: My Kenmore side by side refrigerator is not freezing nor cooling.
surfgl,
The model you posted does not help me much but a rough estimate would be (from Sears) about $400.00 for the compressor + about $225.00 Serv Call and Labor. Possibly another $15.00 access valve and then tax.
The problem you have is that the compressor is locking up then it may run again for a short time. It will eventually lock up and not run again. If you can prove it is (by receipt) that it is less than 5 years old, Sears will repair it free under the sealed system warranty.
The model # and serial # should be on a sticker in the top front of the ref section. If not then on the left wall or right wall top front of ref section.
If this helped please rate me good. supertechks
