Question about YouTube Videos

1 Answer

I have wired up 6 x outside lights via a dawn dusk sensor ( 4 x 20w lights and 2 x 60w ordinary bulbs) which are connected to the Garage & Boiler circuit via a 3amp fuse box. Whenever the boiler kicks in the circuit breaker trips and shuts that circuit down. The 3 amp fuse stays intact. Can anyone tell me whats going wrong ?

The way you describe the connections, it looks like your 3Amp fuse is presently hooked up to protect the 6 lights, and by calculations, it will. Are you saying that this new hook up is feeding from a circuit that also runs the boiler? My guess is that the load from the boiler, with the extra draw from the lights exceed the breaker circuit limit. Let me know if that's what you mean! I would say if that's the case, find a separate feed for the lights in the circuit breaker panel so it does not load the boiler circuit. Let me know if this makes sense for your situation.

I want to replace my existing single bulb porch light with a 2 bulb motion activated light. It would be operated with the existing switch. Is this ok to do?

Yes. Must keep switch turned ON.
Outdoor lights will only come on when motion is detected, otherwise light bulb does not come on. So the indoor wall switch does not work as override since the motion sensor takes over as the sole switch.
Copy following link for wiring illustrations:
    http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-occupancy-switch.html#motion
Other solutions include adding separate motion sensor light nearby and keep porch light so you can turn on-off when desired.
Another option is to add photocell to outdoor light so it turns on automatically at dusk.
Another option is to use outdoor yard timer with dawn-dusk capability:
    http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#outdoor
Another option is to replace indoor wall switch with with dawn-dusk timer, that can also be used as ordinary on-off switch so you can turn porch light on-off when desired. Timer such as Intermatic ST01C offers simple 2-wire connection.:

Can I install a utilitech Dusk-to-Dawn light control, #0314355 in a 'horizontal' position, rather than the 'vertical position shown on the packaging? It goes 'on-and off' in a 15 s

    Timer is probably wired incorrectly.
Copy following links for correct wiring, and larger instructions.
I have tested this timer, and some problems can also be caused by overlapping and conflicting programs: reset timer and review timer instructions:

Why does light blink off and on when set at dusk/dawn

If lights blink on-off, then red wire is connected where blue wire should be.
Red wire should be capped, and not used when timer is used for single pole operation.
OR connect red wire and blue wire together if you want Dawn-to-dusk operation instead of dusk-to-dawn
Open following link and scroll down to bottom for wiring diagrams.

    Lost instructions for photocell Type:ET321

Here is how it works. The push button repeats itself in following sequence (must plug in).
    F 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A d 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

    F: timer is off.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9: from dusk to dawn count down number of hours repeated every day. That's most useful to control outdoor lightings.
A: from dusk to dawn count down number of hours which is randomly selected by this timer. Which is usually for indoor use to turn lights on and off for number of hours. The randomly selected hours is a security feature so that lights on (on from dust, but off randomly) time shows no pattern to outsiders.
d: just on from dusk and off at dawn. It is also used to control outside lights but just a little wasteful in my opinion.
    1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.: meaning count down number of hours starts from the time when the button is pushed so that you can have a countdown timer at any time.

Wiring in a remote motion sensor to existing lights

yes it can be done and they are on the market from regular hardware retailers and security specialists
they come as a complete diy box with the light/movement sensor and a light fitting
the sensor "sees" daylight and turns off the unit until the lux reading drops then turns on the light
on off is controlled by the setting that you make on installation
motion then turns on the light and the period that the light remains on can be set by the knob adjustments
Average cost starts around $25.00 aud up to $100.00 aud depending on quality
normally they have only 1 light of 100 watts included in the box but they will run successfully on 15 watt fluro bulbs because all that is wanted is light and a 15 watt fluro bulb puts as many lumens ( light measurement) as a 100 watt bulb
if you want to run more bulbs of higher wattage , talk with an electrician about putting a relay after the sensor so that the current flow through the sensor is reduced and allow it to operate better and longer

After changing the bulb in my model no 561456 outside sensor light, it no longer will come on at dusk and off at dawn even though all the switches are set properly, how can this

check the bulb, listen when switching on as you can hear it click, if no click use a cheap screw driver tester on brown or red coming in should light up, if not check fuse on plug or switch.
