Mine will not spin or agitate. Water does drain, timer works, and switch works. Sounds like a clutch engaging during the agitate/spin cycle. Any idea's. I have the washer apart right now (needed a good cleaning anyway) but looking for some advise.

So. Fix or relace the washer?

I have the same problem. I'll start to check the motor / gearbox coupling first, then the agitator from the top. It's great these things happen around the hiliday time when cash is tight !

My washer does not always spin out, I have replaced the coupling - did not solve problem, the size of the load seems to make a difference, I can empty the washer, get it spinning then add clothes and it works fine, Worst with towels

The usual culprit is the motor-transmission coupler. This is located between the motor and the transmission. You need to remove the pump and then the motor to access it.

Excess water in clothes after spin cycle

Unblock the outflow pipe from the machine that goes into the sump under the sink. (have a pot ready for water overflow) This will help drain the water. If the spin cycle is making a screetching sort of noise then it is possible that the carbon brushes will need changing. This affects the spinning if the brushes are worn.

Washer won't drain, makes loud noise

This problem, or some variation thereof evidently is very common with these Whirlpool Washers!  I have same problem.  So far, best I have found is at
diagnosis by someone who knows.  What William Burk says there makes sense.  However, to get to the drive block there's quite a bit of disassembly required.  I am stopped because I cannot get the spanner nut off.  Hope this gives you some help toward finding a more comprehensive answer

Whining noise, only in rinse and spin cycle, sounds awful.

Check the pump to make sure there isn't something stuck in it.
