Need a new belt -- you might have suction but you need the brush to spin (hard to help without make or model, upright or canister)

yes the burning smell is caused by the belt,so change it. also check each side of the brushes. there are bearings on either side. you may be able to pull them off and clean them out. next check the filters. if they are clogged then you will have poor suction,so change them. the other clog might be in the hose. you will have to snake it out. if you can't do it with ease then the hose will have to be taken apart. both ends of the hose can be taken off. if you are going to try this, first start with the end which goes into the canister. the other side of the hose is harder and care has to be taken or it will break off--------------BY GETERDUN

check the bottom for the canister. you may have a cracked base. if this is true then you have air being sucked in from crack in base. you will have to replace the base. be CAREFUL taking the wheels off. replacing base means taking motor,pc board or relay, cord reel, and wires to the hose off and placing in new base. make sure to mark old model # on to new base.

I had the same problem. First I disconnected the hose that attatches to the top of and bottom back-side. Make sure it is not clogged. Mine was clogged so I used a wire coat hanger and carefully pushed all the junk out. also I turned the vac over on its front, took the metal plate off the bottom, and dug out any extra stuff that I saw. you would be suprised how much hair and junk gets caught. Then I put it back together and replaced the bag. It worked like new for me. Hope this helps.

check Belt - if your vacuum has a hose check it for suction --(make and model - canister or upright?) If belt is broken it does not matter how much suction you have - you need aggitation to clean carpet.
