Error 5100 refers to the encoder strip not being read correctly.
Open the main cover so you can see the carriage (The print head, where the ink cartridges are). While it is moving you must pull out the power lead so it stops mid-travel .with no power you can move the carriage easily. Slid it to the left. You can now see the encoder strip. Its a thin translucent strip running the full width of the machine. I had black lines in it. I suspect it is dirty and wants cleaning with a cotton bud soaked in water. Run the bud along as much of it as you can. If dirty the bud will come out in dark blue. Now dry the strip with a dry bud. BE CAREFULL. do not apply any amount of pressure on it as it can break very easily. It is spring loaded. Move the carriage back to the right side. When it was on the left there may have been a wheel also of the same material up against it. Clean the round strip in the same way. Hopefully that will get it going again.

I get a service error 5100. What is this and how do i fix it? i changed ink cartridges and then got this error. it seem the cartridges only fit one way because i tried to reverse how i put them in.

Hello !

Service error 5100 is a carriage error. Be certain that the strip is remove from the cartridges. Check the timing strip for contamination (plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
Check for obstructions. Check inside your printer through the gears that you can see under the lid. There should be something obstructing the gears such as dirt. There could be paper caught underneath the rollers. Check VERY thoroughly.

Hope this helps.

Error 5100

5100 = a carriage error
*** ALWAYS DISCONNECT POWER FROM WALL BEFORE WORKING ON MACHINE***

Check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width). The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.
Clean the inside, check your ink cartridges and make sure they are properly installed ( if not they may stop the carriage from moving properly) and then turn off and back on.

Error Code 5100

Carriage error. Paper or the print mechanism is blocked.

It could mean the rollers don't grip the paper, there is torn paper keeping the rollers from turning, the paper can't stick to the rollers etc.,

Service error 5100

Error 5100 is either a logic board, or
the code strip (if that is the problem) is another matter -
It is the plastic strip that runs across the printer and through the head
carriage, it is supported at each end (one end under spring tension).
If it has become dislodged it will give this error, also if it has any ink,
grease or other foreign matter on it, it will give errors.
You can clean it with a cloth dampened with water but you need to exercise
great care to avoid pulling it off its anchors.
The other thing to do is clean the stainless steel bar that the carriage sli
des
on and lubricate it with a cloth moistened with 3-in-1 or light machine oil.
If neither of these works then I guess it is repair shop or replacement time
