Yes! if the microwave does not have proper ventilation it will go into shutdown, causing it to over heat. The thermal fuse will open if to much heat is detected and can take 30 minutes or more to reset before you can use it again.

MICROWAVE IS DEAD. IT CAME ON FOR 3 SECONDS AND THEN WENT DEAD. NO LIGHTS NO CLOCK NO NOTHING. IT IS BUILT IN OVER THE OVEN. IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1998.

sounds like you may have a blown fuse. . remove the 2 screws at the hop thats holding the ventillation grill. remove screw holding control panel. push control panel up slightly and lift out. . there should be another metal sheet covering the opening. remove and your fuse should be right behind that.

I have a friend who has a OTR JVM1850 and does not want to use it for ventilation. Can he use it within a cabinet opening without turning fan on and with ample space for the microwave to breath?

The owner's manual and installation instructions will tell you how much free space must be around the oven for proper internal cooling.

Unless your Microwave is older, you have a problem. The newer electronic ovens require a lot of ventilation to keep their circuits from overheating. Further, I know of no microwave recipes that produce grease. You may want to get back to me on this.
