not quite what I was looking for, I will explain more fully:

The notebook monitor is permanently set to being monitor 2, as such I cannot change its settings unless I have an external monitor connected. What I want is to go back to having the notebook monitor being the primary monitor?

When extending the windows desktop in display properties, I assume "primary monitor" refers to the main monitor that displays the task switching window when pressing alt-tab, which is monitor #1 when clicking "identify" (right?)
as follows
1. Using the function key combination to swap monitors, (Fn F10 on mine), I set it so that only the external monitor is enabled.
2. Then, (as this is now the primary monitor) I use the windows display manager (in Vista you can access this through Windows key & 'X') to select the notebook monitor as my extended desktop.
3. There is no 3. It's that simple. The ATI catalyst control center (you'll like it once you get used to it, honestly!) will reflect these changes, so once you've done this you can use the CCC to make additional changes (in my case I have a Viewsonic LCD that I rotate to portrait mode and the CCC lets me do that)

------------------------------------Set up the dual monitors with the notebook display as the primary and extend the Windows desktop onto the monitor. Click on the "Advanced"
button on the Display Properties Settings tab. This brings up a dialog box with many tabs. Select the Displays tab. On this tab, you will be able to set the notebook as the primary and the laptop/pc display as the secondary. pc has a program called ATI, which may be what is allowing to do this. Be careful when you are doing this. My first attempt resulted in my setting the monitor as the primary display, but not having the Windows desktop on it. As a result, I could not do anything. In order to fix this I had to bring up the task manager
(Ctrl-Alt-Del) and start a new explorer process.

You may need to check some configuration of dual monitors.

Did you change the graphic card for the primary monitor? There could be a support between that graphic card and the monitor.
Did you check the power settings about monitor and disable any power saving plans?

Using notebook display and external monitor: HP Pavilion zd8205us primary display is garbled, secondary display is clear and good, It doesn't matter which display device you set as primary or secondary

try to switch the blue VGA cable that is connected from the laptop to the external monitor. You may also restart your laptop and set aside the external monitor to check if the laptop is still experiencing garbled display... If it still is, then it is a monitor issue and need to address to HP personnel by calling HP hotline. Otherwise your issue will be resolved by simply doing that..

Dual monitor setup

Assuming you are using Windows Vista:

All you have to do is connect your laptop to a monitor via a VGA port (located on either the side or at the back of your laptop - it's the port with about 15 holes).

Once connected , you will need to configure how your 2nd monitor will function - as an extended or duplicate monitor. To set this you will need to go to Display Settings > and select your option.

Syncmaster 740n blinking blue power light + Dell lcd situation

There are two reasons why capacitor blow up is higher voltage than it can take or higher temperature than the mark on the capacitor. When I repair psu I always change ALL capacitors, primary and secondary section.Bad capacitor in primary section is usually reason for overvoltage in secondary.Fuse is in power line of 820mF.As I remember they are paralel connected so follow +line back to the diode. There is a small green component looks like resistor betwen diode and capacitors.
Same thing is with other two monitors princip is the same.
