Question about FrancisFrancis! X1 Espresso Machine

Leaking water from steamer

I have a second hand francis francis X1 expresso machine which seems to leak. Water leaks from around the brewhead when using the single expresso holder but not the double, and worst of all, water comes out of the steamer when steaming milk. I'm left with watery milk which won't thicken, and bubbles on top. Are these serious problems? I would be very grateful for any ideas on how to solve them, especially the steamer problem? Many thanks!

I can't see a bump on the basket, but I will get a replacement and try that.  I have tried flushing the wand just before steaming and I think it does make a difference.  The milk does seem less watery, although I've only tried using full cream milk so far.  I have yet to try semi-skimmed again.  Many thanks for your help!

For the grouphead check the basket there might be a slight bump around the edge that is preventing it from making a good seal when it contacts the gasket in the head. If the Double works fine then the gasket is not the problem.
For the steam wand try flushing wand for 3 seconds just before steaming, if that does not help with the watery milk, then the boiler is not getting hot enough to produce steam.

Don't know how your controls are set, but you have two switches on the front and a knob on the right. The switch for the steamer (the right hand switch) should be off. The knob on the right should be turned clockwise to turn in off. Then no water or steam should come out of the steamer wand. If it does, the seal on the knob inside the machine is broken. It can be repaired but only if you're handy with a screwdriver (make sure if you take it apart you disconnect it from the mains).

I bought a second hand Francis Francis X1 Espresso Coffee Machine & the gauge & Milk frother are no longer working. Any advice?

Perhaps the heating element is broken. Does it heat up at all? If not, the steamer won't work and there will be nothing for the gauge to register.

Conair steamer leaks water and wets my clothes.

When I use mine I hang the hand held part from my closet door, while I am waiting for it to heat up. When the hose gets too much condensation, from the steam, it leaks out... This will also happen if you try to use in the motion of an iron. The hand held part needs to be at a vertical position at all time to prevent leaking.

Pour in a solution of 50% distilled white vinegar and 50 % water. Set the steam wand knob to a water setting, and run the solution through there. I would suggest letting a small amount of the vinegar/water solution drip out, then cut the machine off for about 20 minutes - allowing the vinegar to thoroughly soak and decalcify the insides. After 20 minutes, let the remaining vinegar/water pour through.

Francis Francis X1

Some leaking from the group head of the machine is totally normal while the machine is heating. The reason for this is that the valve that sits above the shower screen is simply a spring and rubber ball. The spring expands, creating a seal with the rubber ball and the boiler, once the boiler reaches a specific temperature. Until the boiler temp is reached, leaking from the group head will occur.

Francis Francis! x1 leaking

Well, to state the obvious, you should call Francis! Francis! at 1-877-854-4141 and ship it to them for repair. It's unlikely you can perform a fix yourself. Have you tried opening the machine up? I got PDFs of diagrams and part lists, which I obtained by calling them at the number quoted above. Good luck! Stephen
