From what you're describing it sounds like the lid switch is faulty. Open & close the lid slowly & listen carefully for the click of the lid switch. If you do not hear the lid switch, you will need to replace the lid switch. Other testing will require accessing the controls & using a meter to make some more checks with. If the motor is not running & the lid switch checks good I suspect the timer. If the motor is running in the spin cycle but the basket is not spinning I suspect the drive block, basket drive, transmission or clutch.
This could be partly the clutch/break assy. You need to be able to run this with the lid open in the spin position. Activte the lid switch with a pencil or something. Reach in and hold the spin basket and then turn the washer on in spin. Hold this basket for 1-2 minutes then release it and let it reach full speed then stop the washer by turning the timer off or releasing the lid switch. See if the hard breaking/noise is better. Keep doing this untill it comes to a smooth stop and the noise is gone at the stop. Not sure this will cure the noise in the spin starting up problem or not, but start here. the clutch gets rust on the pads and this burnishes the break pads, removing this rust that makes it grab.
Error OL means that the washer has sensed an overload (OL) condition. It can also be a false error code appearing due to faulty lid switch. Sometimes this error code appears when lid is not closed/opened properly. You can check the lid switch for any disconnections, if the connection to lid switch is fine then use a multimeter to check the continuity of the lid switch. If the lid switch is fine then there is a piece of clothing stuck between inner basket and the outer tub. Disconnect the washer from the power outlet and then try moving the drum with your hand and check if it turns freely or is offering any resistance. If it is not moving freely then it is due to rusted drive shaft or motor. Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more assistance.
Your basket drive/ clutch or the drive block may be bad . Can you hear
the motor running during spin? Can you turn the drum by hand when it is
stopped? I would also look for something stuck between the basket and
the outer tub a sock or???? Stick a screwdriver in the lid switch slot
so you can see what is going on with the lid open and see if basket will
spin with a little help. Does it make any unusual noises?
normally if is filled with water an does not spin, check ur door switch may be bad or broken also check the lid make sure the smaill white tab is there too, the switch normally break when someone stands or slamms the lid hard or puts heavy baskets over the lid ,the switch mounting screws base is made out of plastic so is easy for it to split
the lid switch is a safety device that stops the machine while on spin cycle, in case you forgot your wallet u go back to get it stick ur hand in it, and is on spin cycle, as soon as u open the door, the door will deactivate the power tho the washer, and the basket will stop, when not going into spin mode is one of the main reasons
We are sorry to hear of the problem with your Whirlpool appliance. We would recommend having a local certified technician in your area properly diagnose and repair the issue you are experiencing. Please email us at Whirlpool_Reviews@Whirlpool.com with your name, phone number, address and the model and serial number for your washer.
With the lid open, set the cycle to spin and press the lid switch button with a pen. Wait until the drum gets to full speed and release the lid switch. If the drum makes a knocking/ thumping noise and doesn't stop spinning within 2-3 seconds, the basket drive block is worn and needs to be replaced. (The basket drive block is located on the gearcase drive shaft, under the tub and agitator) If this has been happening for a long time you may need to replace the brake and drive tube assembly as well.
Basket drive block part number is 389140
If that's not it, let me know and I will try to help you further. Good luck!
I would first check the lid switch and the plunger that pushes the lid switch. If both are good I would make sure the machine is washing properly. If the machine will not wash or spin you have a bad coupling. If the washer will wash then stop at the spin it is usually a bad lid switch, or transmission. The transmission will have a 5 year warranty. It is also possible that you have an object stuck under the main wash tub. You can remove the cabinet and look for objects or you can remove the wash basket itself. Good luck with your repair.
