Question about HP Pavilion zd7020US Notebook

3 Answers

ZD7020US Display Display is in 4 segments.About 2 inches of the top of the screen disappeared and reemerged at the bottom.About 4 inches of the screen shifted right and reappeared on the left side of the screen. You can actually have the cursor go out the right side of the screen and come back in on the left or go out the top and come back in at the bottom.I hooked a monitor to the laptop and it works great on the external monitor.Any ideas what causes this problem?

The answer may lie in getting your video card fixed
or resoldering the display screen wires.

Re: ZD7020US Display

Sounds like you have the wrong monitor drivers installed,  download updated monitor drivers from the manufacturer's website,

also check your display settings,  as something is really wrong there.

My screen turns black after a few minitues, samsung r505

screen Inverter is going out.

Primer first if I may;

An LCD screen cannot produce light,

(Click on the monitor icon)

It needs an additional light source. A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, (Or more than one), or a series of LED's
(Light Emitting Diode)

The Samsung R505 series uses a single (1) CCFL,

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch, or about the width of this capital letter -> O <-

Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height.
View the last 8 photos,

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power (Electricity), from the laptop; for the LCD screen and Backlight.
90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault can be attributed to a bad screen Inverter.

Click on photo to enlarge. Both top and bottom view are shown.

Primer over.

The plastic frame in front of the LCD screen is the Display Bezel.

The screen Inverter is located behind the Display Bezel, and mounted to the bottom of the Screen Frame.
The metal picture looking frame, which surrounds the LCD screen layers.
(3M link shows you an LCD screen is made up of layers)

A) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

B) Open the laptop.

There are 4 Screw Covers going across the Top, of the Display Bezel.
Two on each side of the Webcam.

There are 2 Screw Covers across the Bottom.
One in each corner.

These are gently pried off. I use a computer pick. I do not use a metal blade such as a box cutter, but leave it up to you.

The Screw Covers are made of synthetic rubber, or plastic.
They are held in place by a type of rubber cement.
I lift up at the bottom of the Screw Cover, where the base of it meets the Display Bezel. (Push in a little, lift up)

If you are careful you should be able to reuse them. If one doesn't stick anymore, apply a TINY dab of rubber cement with a toothpick tip.
I LIGHTLY stick them to the Display Bezel for safekeeping.

{Yes. They like to stick to the tool, your fingers, and passing airplanes(?)
Oh? You think I'm kidding? Sure. Just wait until you're taking one off, and a passing jet goes overhead } (lol!)

Remove the Philips head screws. (6)
No.1 Philips screwdriver, or equivalent Jewelers screwsdriver.

The Display Bezel has TABS going around the exterior perimeter, on the inside.
These Tabs snap into matching LATCHES on the Display Cover.
(Top cover with the laptop closed)

Just a basic guide, posted for the Display Bezel removal technique.
I would lay the Display Assembly back to an angle.

Then cut a thick piece of heavy construction paper, or equivalent; to just fit the inside edges of the Display Bezel.
This will help protect the LCD screen from your fingernails, when removing the bezel.

I would also start at the top right, or top left. Move towards either side, then go down side.
Use care as the sides are thinner. Also watch it on the bottom, because the Display Bezel may hang up on the Hinge Covers, when coming off.

It's made of space-age plastic, and is pretty tough stuff; but can be broken.

Once the Display Bezel has been removed, remove the single screw that holds the screen Inverter in place, bring screen Inverter out, and unplug cables. One coming in, one going out.

The connectors are different from each other on those cables, and only plug in one way.

Screen Inverter replaced, cables back in their Channels and Latches, snap the Display Bezel back in place, install screws, and Screw Covers.

When the computer comes on it starts fading out then it goes blank

Laptop? The Inverter is going bad. (Screen Inverter)

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.

Similar to the Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
(Average Backlight is approximately half the thickness of a No.2 pencil, and 3 to 4 inches long.
There are many variations, however)

An Inverter is used to convert the electricity provided by the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

90 percent of the time the fault is a bad Inverter.

The Inverter is usually located behind the Display Bezel in the Display Assembly, and at the middle/bottom of the LCD screen.
It is a small circuit board.

Example of a typical Inverter,

[The Display Assembly consists of all the parts that make up the display.

A) LCD screen

B) Display Bezel (Thin plastic frame in front of the LCD screen, and surrounds the LCD screen)

C) Top Cover (Top plastic piece of laptop)

D) Screen frame (Metal frame that resembles a picture frame. Surrounds the LCD screen.
{The LCD screen is composed of layers. This frame keeps them in an aligned state)

E) Hinges

F) Hinge Brackets

These are a few of the Display Assembly hardware components.

What is the laptop manufacturer's name, and Model Number?
(On the bottom of the laptop is the Model Number. Sometimes referred to as Product Number. P/N)

Attach an external monitor to your PC. If the problem continues there, it's your graphics card.
If the problem disappears, you have stuck/dead pixels.
You could try a very gentle rubbing of the pixel(s).

My toshiba satellite A-135-S4477is showing lines vertical on the screen

you have a bad display, if you press around the OUTSIDE around the display while the computer is on they should disappear, until you stop pressing on it the top and bottom are the areas to press upon with you forefinger and thumb, NOT THE DISPLAY, this will tell you, you have a damaged display and it needs replaced.

What your describing is a failure of the LCD or possibly the inverter cable connection to the LCD. Most likely an LCD replacement will be required.

Display problems

Doesn't sound real good. Probably the LCD panel or driver chip. The chip is normally a part of the mother board. You might want to try reseating the LCD screen cable on both the LCD end and the motherboard end. That may resolve the problem. If not, try plugging in and external monitor. If you get a good display on that, you probably have a bad LCD, although there is still the possibility of the motherboard being bad.. If you don't get a good display on the external. you have a bad motherboard.
