SOURCE: Cannot heat

Sounds like it overheated, tripped the thermostat, then the thermostat reset. Chances are you have a bad magnetron. GE may have a campaign (not a "recall", mind you!) to offer free replacements if yours is a model that has a known history of problems with the magnetrons. I would call GE and ask them about that. *grin* GE Answer Center 1-800-626-2005 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

SOURCE: Microwave won't come on after circuit tripped

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

There should also be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Once you remove the control panel assembly, the fuse is located in a holder behind that area toward the top. The tech sheet shows part locations.

But you'll almost certainly need to have the control board repaired.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: microwave won't heat

Sorry my Clarification Request came out as a single blob of a paragraph.

That's not how I typed it. I never write that way!

So I've pasted it here, but as a solution.

Magnetrons generally should last about 2000 hours, but several factors can shorten that.

If it's not OVER ten years old (from the purchase date or the date on the tag inside the unit) then the magnetron is still under warranty.

From the owner's manual:

"For the second through the tenth year from the date of original purchase

"The magnetron tube, if the magnetron tube fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship. During this nine-year limited warranty, you will be responsible for any labor or in-home service costs.

"For the above limited warranty: To avoid any trip charges, you must take the microwave oven to a
General Electric Customer Care® servicer and pick it up following service. In-home service is also
available, but you must pay for the service technician’s travel costs to your home."

GE Customer Service is here, and you can verify the warranty status and find your nearest authorized servicer.

If you're sure the magnetron's bad, it's still under warranty, and you or a friend are handy, they will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.

It does sound like the magnetron overheated and the magnetron's thermostat opened until it cooled down.

An overheating magnetron can be due to:

  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage (should be 110-125VAC)
  • foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust
Since yours is a counter top model, there are less of those factors to worry about.

When you hit Start to microwave, do the inside light, cooling fan, and turntable all come on?

Any unusual noises? Is it louder or quieter than usual?

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts if needed by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Let us know what you find out or decide.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: My microwave suddenly has no power, clock etc. I

Hello there and thank you for choosing fixya:
This is a very common issue with microwaves
Yes you are right it does indeed have a fuse inside of it
you first need to unplug it of course then take out all of the screws that are along the outer edge on the back there may be 4 or 6 ok next there are 3 or 4 screws that are on the sides that need to be removed ten if you take a small flat tip screw driver and insert it in the seam at the top towards the front you should be able to slide the cover back about 1 to 2 inches then it will lift up and slide off
Next if you look towards the front on the same side as the power panel yuwill see a electronic board it has the fuse on it it looks like this picture i have below simply remove the fuse and replace it WITH THE EXACT TYPE OF FUSE OK
then plug it in and ensure every thing is working if so great go ahead and unplugit again and put the cover back on ok but if not please post me back so i can continue the troubleshooting from there ok ? here is the pict

There is a short somewhere. When the door is open it shorts the main capacitor to ground so it doesn't operate when the door is open. It blew the main fuse on the microwave. If you decide to fix it, look at the door switches as well. One of them will more than likely be bad.

I went to use my mirowave & it is completely gone. I pushed every button that I could & nothing happens. What should I do

first check the breaker in the electrical panel. your microwave should be on a circuit with nothing else. Depending on when the house was constructed. If the breaker is tripped turn it off and back on. If the microwave is plugged into a gfic outlet check to see if the receptacle needs reset. There will be a reset button on the receptacle. Their may be a orange light on the receptacle.

Microwave PLMVZ169 GCB night light push button does not work. Replace the light bulb. Push button still does not work. The work light does when I push the night light it stays on. Just wondering how to...

Q - While trying to change the light bulb on the oven, the bulb broke. When it did, it threw the circuit breaker and the whole oven went out. After resetting the breaker, everything on the oven works except there is no power to either light socket. Any ideas or suggestions on what to replace?
A - You tried to change the light bulbs with the power still on.....tsk tsk!!
Hate to say this....but probably blew out part of the circuit on the smart board ( the brains behind the key panel you touch ) when the short blew. The light relay on the smart board may have been damaged but 9 out of 10 times when I check them, the board itself is damaged.
check out this problem.
please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.thanks,

My daewoo microwave/toaster blew my breaker upon resetting it and plugging in the microwave it blew again then it tripped my GFI what could be the problem?

Probably a short inside the microwave circuitry.  I had a Daewoo and had nothing but trouble with it.  Main board went out in a year, then again in another year.  Finally went to Home Depot where I bought it and was told that they had nothing but trouble with them and quit selling them.  Now I have a GE Spacemaker.

There won't be a reset button.

Is it dead? No display, no lights, etc.?

If your outlet is live but your microwave is dead, then you likely have an open internal fuse, thermostat or thermal cutout.

Please post back if you need more help and think you or a friend want to work on it.
