If it gives you a dos line enter chkdsk /p ENTER, otherwise unless you have the installation disk to reinstall the Windows there is nothing you can do UNTIL!

Toshiba stuck on start-up screen.

The windows files have been corrupted, I was hoping you might get into safe mode to try a system restore but your system will not allow it. If you can find your recovery disc a clean install is the best way to go. Try contact customer support about a replacement recovery disc.

Matshita dvd-ram uj-841s I/O device error

Since the drive functions on a bios level, try a bios update or flash. This should bring it back.

go to 'device manager', look for CD/DVD and ensure that the driver is functional for this specific model you mentioned. also check Toshiba website for any device updates for this unit.

You should be able to use someone else's Windows CD as long as you match the version. If you are supposed to have Home use a home CD or of your sticker says Pro use the Pro CD.

It would be best to use the Toshiba CDs or DVD that came with the system though if you have it.
