Question about Samsung HCL4715W 47" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

I have a Samsung rear projection TV, not sure what model number or anything, it is about a 42 inch and about 6 years old now. The problem first started several months ago, basically when the TV was turned on, occasionally the picture would be distorted, and the sound would not work, it was noticeable by these red, green and blue curved lines which went across the top of the screen. At first you could just turn it off and back on and it would be fine, but the last month or so I have found that it can a long time before it starts working, sometimes it seems to take over an hour to 'warm-up' or something before it starts working properly, basically it is useless and frustrating and cannot be used. I guess I am just curious about what you might think is wrong with the TV and how much it might cost to get it fixed? Thanks, James

Hi. OK, you will have to replace some serious hardware in order to restore this unit. i will post the circuit boards and there respective part numbers below.

Main board---Samsung Part Number: AA94-03388T
Convergence Board---Samsung Part Number: BP95-00415H

Sounds like the convergence chip. i think you can get a kit from tvrepairkits.com not sure how much it would be to have fixed. But if your good with a soldering iron i think their kits come with instructions as well.

Rear projection tv picture quality loss

most of these sets have 3 lens for the three picture tubes inside and also a mirror---if it has never had the lens cleaned they could be dusty and this will diminish the brightness and clarity of your picture---if real dirty the picture will look washed out------most of these sets you can remove the back cover(unplug set first) and gain access to the lens ; clean them with a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner.

This was a $4000 TV 5 years ago. I own one, and it is still a very good TV. The biggest thing that can go wrong (and is worth repairing) is the light bulb can go out & it costs about $200 to replace. If anything else major goes out, it is probable better replaced than repaired.

Picture shadow on rear projection Sony big screen TV

You have 2 distinct problems that should be addressed separately. Please repost the Samsung problem. I will address the Sony problem here.

If the "shadow" makes the picture seem somewhat of a 3D one, the problem is with the convergence circuit. This could be as simple as bad connections on the pins of the convergence ICs or defective ICs. If you can solder and would like to attempt the repair, update this and I'll provide more details and instructions.
