This is perfectly normal as unless you actually lock the printer in black and white or grayscale modes it will automatically use a small amount of the coloured inks to "tone" the black text to make it look nicer, once you install a new cartridge in the colour side you can simply put the printer in B&W or Grayscale mode until you need to print colour to save ink and money.
Try changing printing preferences/properties. Click on option for color, then click on box for "black ink only" or similar. Try now. If you still cannot print after changing preferences/properties, you will need to replace color ink cartridge due to manufacturer's built-in software that prevents printing when ink is low. Great for the ink companies!!!
