I am not sure about the solution, but I had a similar problem. My technician opened up the controller and cleaned it physically, this solved my problem. I hope it solves urs too.

These are computer speakers, they will not work for a dvd player... Your dvd player has an rca/collex (SP) cable while your speakers have a 2.5 headphone style jack

This sounds like an electrical problem in the speaker circuitry - between the speaker(s) and the control knob.
