Question about Dell UltraSharp 1704FPT 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

17 inch dell flatscreen monitor stops in its tracks

For some reason the monitor no longer works - it has a power light, but my desktop does not come up on my screen - it is just black!

I recently added skype to my computer, but made no other changes. All cords are in place as are power cords. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for all of your replies! To complicate matters I am writing on behalf of my 80 year old father who lives in another state so it may take a bit to work through your suggestions - probably with the help of geek squad!

gough2960 in regards to your request for clarification, I do not currently have a second monitor to test, but like the idea and may see if a colleague has one available.

benwabnick, in regards to your request for clarification, I will tell my dad to try this tomorrow first thing.

Have you tried the monitor on another computer?

If you unhook the monitor from the PC and turn on the monitor, does it at least show you a self-test screen?

Sounds like most of the monitor's circuitry is working except for the backlight. If you place a flashlight on the screen you may be able to see your desktop items in the light ring around it. This doesn't fix the problem but it will tell what is wrong. The price of some monitors is low enough now to make this one not worth spending on for repairs. You could sell it as broken on ebay and use the proceeds towards one of the new ones.

Usually the problem is in the MAIN POWER BOARD , BEFORE taking it to a repair shop , open the monitor and check for cold solder or burnt solder around where is a transformer , most of the problem is this , hope it helps , AJ

Hello,

You have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitorswill blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts calledcapacitors overheating in the confined space of he monitor. If you aregood at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix he problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htmYou can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the badparts, replace any that look like the pictues and your monitor should workfine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and -connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the newone thesame way. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping. I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

My 22" dell lcd flatscreen monitor just went out

I know it sounds stupid, but check all the cables and connection. Also make sure the cables are in good order.

Now with that out of the way. Is it getting any lights or indications of power at all? If so it could be a cable or connection point.

Worse case senerio, if your not getting any lights or indications of power (sometimes it seems like it should turn on) the monitor may have had a capacitor or power supple unit failure.

LCD can go out like that from long use or heat. If its older than 4 years its possible its done.
You can have someone open it up and check for budging or bad capacitors. This may be a cheaper option if you have someone is town.

Sorry to hear about the monitor. Good luck!

My DELL flatcreen just went blank and is now flashing yellow light, won't turn on

Check and make sure your connections on the back of the PC are snug...and make sure you have a good connection at the back of the monitor.
Flashing light...is loss of signal.
Good Luck,
Mike

That sounds like the backlight inverter board. Check ebay for the board or a repair kit for it.
