Forgot and put food wrapped in tinfoil inside. it ran and sparks were flying inside. now it will not run at all. what can we do?

You probably blew a fuse or tripped the breaker at least I hope so. You could have damaged the magnetron, in which case it would probably be cheaper to replace the oven but check with your local GE repair service. I would not recommend changing the magnetron yourself unless you have been trained to do so.

Good Luck,

March 2012 - GE does not support customers mad.gif

I have GE microwave with a failed Magnetron. It is emitting large sparks. Upon removing the magnetron I found that the sparks left residue where they are leaking from the cylindrical shaped piece on the end of the Magnetron.

The Magnetron is under warranty.

BUT

GE WILL NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY AND SEND A MAGNETRON.
GE HAS SENT OUT HUNDREDS OF MAGNETRONS TO CUSTOMERS - SEARCH ONLINE TO SEE THIS IS TRUE.

I called GE PARTS, GE support and GE consumer relations department. They changed their policy two weeks ago and require a service technician to replace the part.

THE COST IS $220 FOR THE REPAIR TECHNICIAN.

Since I already removed the part the service technician would have to put in 3 screws and plug in the cable...FOR $220...I PAID $229 FOR THE MICROWAVE NEW!!!!

DO NOT BUY GE.
DO NOT BUY GENERAL ELECTRIC.

GE DOES NOT SUPPORT IT'S WARRANTIES UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY THE SAME AMOUNT THAT YOU PAID FOR THE PRODUCT!!

Further research:

GE Microwaves can spontaneously turn on and start a fire - see Consumer Reports web page here:
http://www.consumerreports.org/content/cro/en/consumer-reports-magazine-march-2012/kitchen-fire-safety.html

Further evidence GE retroactively changing their warranties:

No heat. all seems to work ok otherwise.

rather confused, how did you get to changing the magnetron and what tests did carry out.
if the proper test procedure had been carried out
you would know exactly what was wrong.
I presume you have changed the power circuit protection fuse?

I would recommend changing the diodes as well. This will usually take care of the problem.

My GE Profile microwave will not heat all of a sudden. It is not quite 2 years old. It starts up but won't heat. Do you know what the problem could be? Could it be the magnetron? ...

If the fans are running, the cavity lamp is lit, and the platter is rotating as if the oven is working, this indicates that the safety switches should be okay.

This indicates that the fault may be with the main controler board, or with the power supply for the magnetron. On rare occasions, the magnetron may be defective.

You can bring the oven in for a service estimate. If it is out of warranty, you may find it a little bit expensive to service in relation to changing it.

Ge avantium changing magnetron

Usually you have to remove the outer cover of the microwave, and if it's an over the range model, it will have to pulled down from the wall.

If you don't have your installation instructions, you can download them here.

FYI, these models usually have a 5-year warranty on the magnetron.

We have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

We own a GE Microwave jvm1653sh01

The first thing I would check would be the magnetron TCO (thermal cut-out). This is a little safety devise that protects the magnetron in the event of overheating. These can act up even without overheating. I believe the nuetral side of this TCO runs through the board, and therefore the flickering and shutdown. When the TCO cools, it resets. If it were the door switch, you would blow the fuse and wouldn't be able to set the time without changing the fuse. There are other cavity thermostats that could be the culprit but my quess is on the magnetron TCO. When working with microwaves always unplug the unit and discharge the capacitor. This is high voltage..Good Luck
