I tried to start with the AC adaptor only, but still no response. I've moved the HD to another Dell 610 and it fires up ok, so I'm thinking maybe the mother board is the problem?

For the first 3 seconds, can you get into the BIOS? If you can get in the BIOS, will it stay on for more than 3 seconds? Does it shut down before, during, or after the Dell logo screen?

Take the battery out and only power it up with the AC adaptor and see what happens.

SOURCE: toshiba A60 shuts down in 3 seconds

Bios may be set wrong(fix by restoring default settings)

memory may be damaged(replace if true)

battery may be low and system shuts itself off(make sure battery is charged)

Drivers may be wrong(replace drivers in safe-mode)

Motherboard or other devices inside laptop may be loose and/or shorting.(Go to local computer fix-it shop or (open up laptop and check for loose connections which may void warranty.))

My guess is your bios needs resetting

Hope I am a help.

Two thoughts:
Make sure it's on "plug" power. If problem doesn't happen - it's the battery.

Second heat sensing could be shutting it down.
