This sounds like the defrost cycle is not working. You can manually turn the knob on the defrost timer to see if your defrost heaters come on. If they do you need a new defrost timer, if they don't you will need to check the heaters or the safety switch for continuity. If your meter shows no continuity thru the heater it is time to replace it. Same goes for the safety switch.
If this sounds like to much please contact a qualified service technician.

Freezer goes -9 and fridge goes to 40 I have set it to 0 for freezer and 34 for fridge it changes on its own

Depends on type of refrigerator freezer you have, but you need to realize that the evaporator (cooling coils) are in the freezer, and the cold air produced in the freezer is then circulated via an evaporator fan into the refrigerator section. The thermostat the cycles the compressor motor is located in the refrigerator, and the compressor will run until the temperature reaches the desired level in the refrigerator. On most units, the freezer temperature setting simply regulates how much cold air is circulated into the refrigerator.

What you are describing is that the freezer is working fine (almost too good), but the air is not properly getting to the refrigerator area. Several things can be causing restricted airflow, including a faulty evaporator fan, icing of the evaporator coils because of a malfunction in the automatic defrost system. Check to see if there is frost or ice build up in the back or bottom of the freezer. The proper temperatures should be around 0 F for the freezer and 38-40 degrees F for the refrigerator.

My Samsung Refrigerator side by side door ,,Model,,SRS583DHD,, left hand side door ice maker increases temp and not producing ice,,;-(,,Bot

Your description sounds like a loss of air flow problem. Check for overloading your freezer and fresh food side. In order for the freezer and fresh food side to work properly, the air vents need adequate room for air to circulate. I had a customer who completey filled the middle shelf with cardboard boxes and completely blocked air flow on the middle shelf The lower level near the evaporator was extremely cold and the upper area was room temperature in the freezer. Each shelf needs about an inch of room at the back and room between packaging to allow air to circulate.
Hope this helps

The freezer is not working is not making ice

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Refrigerator won't get cold. Freezer is real cold. Refrigerator always leakes water. Thank you.

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged 5. defrost cycle not functioning properly if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional.

GE fridge is warm and broken; the freezer is cold though.

Air circulation problem. Evaporator fan in freezer moves some air to refrig. Either fan is not working or air passages are blocked with ice. If ice found, then a defrost component failure has occurred. Fix what you find.

REFRIGERATOR NOT WORKING BUT FREEZER IS

The ice could be related to a defrost problem. Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup. The evaporator coils are behind it and if iced heavily will block the circulation of cold air.

Have you checked to see if the freezer fan is running? Have you tried turning the unit off and giving it a 48hour defrost with both doors open? this may fix it if there's ice in the fridge vents. Is there alot of frost on the back wall of the freezer? cheers

Coils ice up/over

I can think of three reasons why your freezer would be icing over. One reason may be that you have a low charge of refrigerant. The lower pressure that your freezer is operating has resulted in a lower temperature refrigerant being circulated. Another reason, if you have forced air circulation, is that one of your evaporator fans have gone out. The third reason I can think of is that your door does not have a good seal and moister is condensing, then freezing near the coils.
